I have had great luck with Asics shoes and I’m currently training in the Nimbius. I’m looking for suggestions for an Asics shoe to run a marathon in. I have tried the Landreth and I was in between sizes. I wear custom orthodics and I have decent (not great) biomechanics.
The kayano’s are the original and the best but i just raced in the DS racer and have also used the DS trainer and both are a very lightweight shoe that i found very comfy and gave great support
.
DS Trainer is a perfect shoe to run a marathon in if you wear orthotics. They don’t last long though (say 150-200 miles), so save them for the race or your mile repeat days. The DS racer would be a stretch if you wear orthotics.
I also love asics products and have been using the Cumulus for the past several season. They work for my foot but your foot may be very different. I tried the DS trainer and had a stress fracture in about a week after training in them. I would find a local running store and get their advise.
DS trainer is a great marathon shoe. However, they do wear out very quickly (the rubber sole is very soft and thin). I’ve gone through 2 pair in the past 10 months without running a ton of miles. Can’t beat the comfort and weight combination though.
Why not just race in the Nimbus? Sure it may be a touch heavy, but at the marathon distance, your body may appreciate the extra cushion and support. I raced in the Nimbus in Boston this year.
One more vote for the DS Trainer. Been an Asics man all my running life - I trained in the Kayano’s for years, and then switched to the 2080. I love the DS Trainer for racing - at 6’1" & 170-175, a flat would be a bit too lean on cushioning for me, but the Trainer is an outstanding marathon shoe.
Shame to hear you are between sized in the Landreth. I do the bulk of my training in the Nimbus and race in the Landreth. A lot of people are recommending the DS Trainer, which is a great shoe, but it didn’t fit me at all and it is a “stability” oriented shoe.
Asics makes the the SpeedStar and Magic Racer which are performance neutral shoes.
As with everything, try on a bunch and see what feels right. You may not be saving much weight between the Nimbus and whichever lighter shoe you are looking at, but I do get a great feeling when I race in the lighter Landreth (but I wear a size 13)
