I have been using gel nimbus for quite a while, since the 11 series. Always liked them. I loved the 15s and found the 16s to be decent, but a little more firm than I wanted at first. I did buy a pair of glycerins from brooks (series 11), but didn’t love them.
I am currently runnjng jn the asics gel nimbus 17s and am wondering if the shoe is too soft. It seems too squishy, and my feet were achy for a while after my firstfew runs. Is it possible that I need something a little more firm? I found a pretty cool shoe rreview site called solereview.com they rated the glycerin 13 series pretty high, but thenimbus a bit low. Im thinking about giving them a shot.
Just curious if any one else thought a shoe was too soft, and wasn’t the right shoe for them
I am currently 195 and want to get down to 175-180. I run 15 to 25 a week, but want to slowly up to 35 a week. I havea fairly high arch, and nuetral motion…
i’ve had many pairs of nimbus, but am now on my second pair of glycerins.
as context, i mostly run (no bike these days, swimming bores me) so i alternate shoes. usually, i’ve had a pair of nimbus and another, lighter pair as well - a few pairs of brooks launches, for instance. i used the nimbus for long runs, and i also really liked them for any time i was travelling - they really can handle just about anything. but they’re a lot of shoe, so i liked alternating them.
last summer, got a good deal on the glycerin 12s and they’ve worked out great. pretty much get the same mileage out of them (550-580 range for nimbus) and they handle the same situations well, but they’re just a bit less shoe, which is nice. just bought a pair of the 13s, despite being a superstitious 13-avoiding person, and thus far they’ve done well. they seem a bit firmer than the 12s perhaps but i’m still breaking them in.
have not run in the nimbus 17, btw (though i think the red ones are the nicest looking nimbuses yet, so they do tempt me)
hope this helps,
-Charles
Thanks for your info. I tried on the 13s the other day and was surprised at the lack of cushion I was feeling. That may be because of the abundance of cushion in the Nimbus 17s. I did have one on each foot. It made me realize how “squishy” the nimbus was. I did a long run on Saturday (6 miles outside-still building) and a short run of 3 miles (on the treadmill) on Monday. Today my feet hurt. I bought a pair of the Saucony Triumph ISO from amazon-with a chance for free returns…so I am gonna give them a shot. I might even make a glycerin 13 purchase to see what I want to keep.
If you do go with a pair of Nimbus let me know your thoughts.
Funny, the 17’s I just started using seemed too hard to me. I’ve been on the Nimbus since the 13 (the 14 was my favorite and still use an old pair for racing). Maybe my 16’s were just very broken in or it might be because the weather has been colder.
One shoe to try on if you’ve been running in the Nimbus 14,15,16 is the Gel Cumlus 17. A good number of runners have gone down to that shoe and found it to their liking. Your experience with the Glycerin 13 is spot on. The Glycerin is more solid than soft.
I have both. I work at a running store so I get A LOT of shoes. I prefer high cushion neutrals but, like you, the 17s are a lil too soft.
The glycerine is indeed a lil more firm and less ‘spongy’ than the nimbus. That is an option. Others that are similar are the Saucony Triumphs or the Mizuno Enigmas. I prefer slightly more the Enigmas as it’s a little more responsive and I like that the upper is a little more old school and has a consistent fit. I don’t have a wide foot.
Overall the 17s have been selling more strong nationwide than the 16s. You and me may not prefer it running but more people prefer the softer feel of this version.
Got a local run specialty store? Talk to them and maybe they have them for you to try or they can, if they’re willing, bring them in without you having to purchase them beforehand. That depends on the store.
