The Asics Gel Nimbus have been my shoe since the 7, still the best IMO. While there were variations in the 8 through 11, still pretty consistent experience.
Just moved from the 11 to the 12, and it absolutely sucks. My left foot is cramping, which went away after playing around with alternate in-soles but they caused the same problem in the right foot.
I didn’t notice much change in terms of the fit, etc. in terms of the Nimbus 12. However, one thing we have come across is that there was a lot more production variability in terms of quality in Asics with the previous batch of shoes.
Good news, though, is that the Nimbus 13 is on the market, and early feedback suggests a more consistent product, in a lighter weight, than the previous model.

I’d try and exchange them for a fresh pair.
Thanks, giving your actual expertise (rare on ST), can you think of what might be causing such a problem? I did go up half a size but dont feel any difference. .
No problems here. Over 800 km in two pairs with no issues. But I moved over from Mizuno’s so I can’t comment on previous versions of the Nimbus. Good luck…
Its on top of the foot, with some radiating up in the lower shin after awhile. (I dont have shin splints)
Technically, there is nothing there that can cramp, the feeling could maybe better be described as a serious dull ache. It starts about a mile in. If I walk it off for another mile, it typically does not re-occur. However, it persists until I stop running.
I just took out an old pair of 11’s, no problem of any kind.
I did go up half a size but it doesn’t actually feel any different. I am also not over tightening the laces.
It could also be related to the asymmetrical lacing. If the 12 is pinching down in a weird way I could see it causing issues like what you are describing.
For the other shoe geeks out there, doesn’t is seem like the asymmetrical lacing is backwards? The lateral side of the foot flares out more but the lacing goes to the medial side.
They do the asymmetrical lacing over the highest point of the foot: the instep. That’s also considered the center of the foot, so there are equal pieces being laced together at that point, believe it or not.
They’ve gotten narrower, and shallower, over the past few seasons.
As for the Nimbus 13: little taller. Touch wider. About .8 oz lighter. Super soft upper. Should be a mega-hit.
I had the same issue and it was frustrating as i had used the nimbus line forever…i went through 3 pairs of them at the store. I finally gave up and got a pair of Nike zoom Vamero’s which i was skeptical with. Since i have changed shoes I have not had any issues. I was getting calf cramps from the Asics. I don’t know what they did but i can run in my old ones and no issues. I have to believe there is a something that is causing this since i have not had the issue immediately after switching…
I finally solved the problem by completely loosening the shoe laces at the front. The issue must be that the front is just too damn tight for my foot.
