Armpits hurting after ocean swim

Why do my armpits hurt after I swim in the salt water? How can I fix this?

do you have armpit hair? i kinda get that in long lap swimming. some body glide where the hair is rubbing under the arm helps a bit

Ever heard the expression “Rubbing salt into the wound”? more than likely your underarm area is rubbing on your wetsuit (I assume you wear one) and the salt is causing that pain.

Is it a deep tissue / muscle / joint ache or are you talking about stinginging on the surface / dermo layer? Are there any marks, spots or sctartches?
Could it be chafing from the wetsuit?

I’ve a mild skin condition that makes my pits dry and sensitive so the skin micro-cracks and I get wicked pit stinging in the ocean or very chlorinated pool. I find that some underarm deodorants make me much more sensative and irritated. Usually I avoid them completly but recently I’ve been using a ‘Green Beaver’ product that does not irritate. Maybe some vaseline on the pits before swimming would help?

I’d assume it’s just chafing. It could be just due to the salt and other things in the water. Also the waves, currents, having to site, etc mess up your stroke more than in a pool and can cause extra rubbing. Use body glide or vaseline to help…

Check with your wetsuit manufacturer before you use something like Vaseline as it may invalidate your warranty or damage the suit. Vaseline is a petroleum based product that may dissolve glues holding your suit together or reduce the flexibility of the materials.

Shave your arms and apply body glide on armpits and on suit. Works for me.

I’m not using a wetsuit. I think I need to lube myself up under my armpits before hand.

It feels like my armpits are on fire after I swim and I’m only talking about doing a 1,500m. Ouch!
