Arizona open water swimming

I am planning on being in Arizona in Feb of next year and was wondering if there is anywhere to get some open water swimming while there.

I have heard that the Tempe Town lake may have a no public swim policy-is this true?

There is a very nice swim area at Canyon Lake 15 miles east of Apache Junction. Look me up when you get here in Feb and don’t forget to bring your bike. The roads near the lake offer some great riding.

Arizona? I’ll assume you mean the Phoenix area…

The water temp in Feb is going to be super cold. If you are going to do it, definitely do it with a buddy, not to mention full-suit, cap, booties, etc.

As the zen-master said, Canyon lake is awesome. There are other lakes as well, Saguaro Lake is the nearest to the IMAZ course and probably fastest to drive to (and great riding there too). Lake Pleasant is good for swimming on the North-West side of town. If you can wait until March, there may be a town lake swim a few weeks prior to the Ironman, was last year anyway. Water temp will be closer to swimable, assuming the lake isn’t flooded like last year.

Keep an eye out for some of the aquathon events held by www.redrockco.com . I haven’t looked to see if they have an '06 series posted yet.

Will be a good time to swim with the fellas that are doing IM AZ. Mojo, Desert Dude, etc. will all be up for an open water swim so look any of us up when you get here. Depends upon what part of town you will be staying in. Everyone needs a little push to get into the water!!!

and ME :slight_smile: where did I open water swim last march brian? It was passed anthem and VERY cold! do people swim in bartlett?

You were in Lake Pleasant. That is a great place to swim and then go for a ride as well as Saguaro. Haven’t seen you for so long I almost forgot about you :wink:
