Argon 18 e-114 size question

Argon 18 e-114 owners, im looking at building up an e114. im 5’7" was wondering what size frame i should get

Not an Argon owner, but your height isn’t what condition your frame size. Get a pro fit, and take the stack and reach # to figure out which Argon frame is good for you.

thanks. im planning on getting on done. i just was looking for a rough estimate. wanted to keep an eye out for one

After determining what stack and reach I needed, I looked at all bikes and determined what fit me and what size I needed. I am 5-9’ and rode a Kestrel Talon Sl size 52 for 5 years. I found that the Orbea Ordu size 51 and the Specialized Transition size M were quite similar. I than found a great deal on an Argon 18 E114 and checked their website which gives you BB to seat numbers and handlebar drop to show you what frame would work for you. I ended up with the SMALL and it is a rocket ship. I can’t believe how fast this bike is. It’s stiff as hell and aero. It’s not the lightest bike, but it didn’t hurt Tjborne. Very comfortable ride.

I just finished building mine up over the weekend and rode it for the first time on Monday and again this morning. Still need to tweak with the set up a bit, move pads around, cut bar extensions again, etc. So far I am a fan. I was surprised how well I climbed on it this morning considering that it’s heavier than my previous TT bike. I am 5’11" with a 33" inseam and I got a medium. Fits good. Just remember that there is less adjustment with the bars/stem/headset on this bike. Argon18 refers to this as their ONEness concept. You can adjust stack height(should not go more than 40mm) and level positioning on the bars but that’s about it. Pads have multiple positions available which helps with the set up. Seatpost is reversible.

Sounds like the small would be a good fit for you.

I had to reply (I’ll try to keep a complicated subject short)…not only am I an Argon 18 E series rider but I’m also 5’7". Having said that, there are different proportions to someone 5’7" but for arguments sake, let’s say we are pretty close. The answer Yes to XS and Yes S frames. I’ve spent a ton of time researching this because 5’7" is a tough height. You are in that in-between height. Cervelo does a pretty good job with it’s 51 frame size but Argon 18 ops for the more Euro approach to geometry. My only complaint is the reach specs are quite long for the frame size. Although not the E114, my E112 is made from the exact mold and thus, the exact geometry. My bike is a E112 size small (and I love it but always wonder what an XS would feel like to ride). What size should you get…well, it’s a matter of personal preference.

The new phylisophy, written by Slowtwitch is to put the largest frame (that fits properly) under you. This reduces the amount of spacers under your stem (I have (1) 5mm spacer). I’m not sure of the whole reasoning behind the author’s view point on frames but it does make sense that a larger frame would be more stable.

So what are the pros riding…oh, that are 5’7". Not a lot of comparison but Samatha McGlone is 170 cm (~5"7") and she rides an Argon 18 E114 XS. She’s got a ton of spacers under her stem and her post is jacked up but she is a pro. Correct me if I’m wrong but pros generally ride 1 size smaller. Maybe it’s weight thing, or maybe they are just more experienced riders and can handle smaller frames better than the average age grouper.

So the conclusion is, in my opinion and experience you can ride both XS and S. You can either be on the top end of an XS or on the bottom end of fitting on the S. If I could do it all over again…I’d serious take another look at a XS. Something about having the seat jacked way up like the pros that appeals to me…ya, it’s probably an ego and vanity thing. The good news is you haven’t bought anything yet so you haven’t made a mistake.
