Are there different sizes of cassette lock rings?

So I have a cheap tool kit that has a cassette lockring tool. I have used this many times on my tri-bike with no problems. But when I try to use it on any mountain bike it doesn’t want to go all the way into the groves and if I put any measurable amount of torque on it the tool slips and strips the tips of the teeth on the tool. All of the cassettes have been Shimano brand. Any ideas?

I think all shimano and Sachs are the same as far as the remover is concerned. 11 tooth and 12 tooth lockrings can be different outer diameters, though. Make sure its seated well, some times you have to tap it in a bit. Don’t twist when turning.

difference may be the hub, not the lock ring… some hubs, the outer dust cap on the end of the axle/bearing assembly inside the cassette body doesn’t leave you much room. that’d be my guess, if I understand your desciption right.

Tool is the same. More than likely it’s the axle hitting the tool not letting it seat as deep. Once you get it seated in the teeth use a skewer to tighten it down, that will keep it from jumping out of the teeth.
