Are there brake pads that work on both carbon and alu wheels?

I have a P2C with OEM wheels. I want to get a set on Zipp 808 and 900. Ideally I’d like to be able to switch back to the OEM from time to time if I go on a very hilly ride or if there is a lot of wind on race day.

I understand that I can get separake brake pads and ‘brake holders’ and just unscrew them to switch. Not a big job but ideally having brakes that do both would be better.

I think alu brake pads work just find on carbon. The main problem, I’m told, is that if little tiny shreds of aluminum from the training wheels get stuck in the pads they can mess up the carbon.

I usually get new carbon brake pads before I race and I’ve never had problems switching to aluminum with them, FWIW.

if you want your carbon wheels to last, you really need dedicated carbon pads that will never touch your stock wheels. See the pads pick up tiny metal particals from the stock wheels and those fine particals will destroy you carbon race wheels rather quickly (atleast much quicker).

maybe others can shed more light. If you get zipp clincher w/alu rims then you can run the same pads for both.

Well, if both are clinchers, then it doesn’t matter, you can use the same pads on your training wheels as you do your race wheels. If, however, your Zipps are Tubular then you need a dedicated pair of pads for those wheels. Otherwise your clincher rims will leave small shards of aluminum in the pads which could then scratch your carbon tubular rims.

Some will tell you that SwissStop Yellows will work but in my experience their performance on Al surfaces (at least running Zipp Clinchers w/ DA and ZG) was horrible.
Plus for $15 worth of brake pads and about 5min to change them I didn’t want to risk my pricy wheels.
