Are there any 1 inch steerer, 26mm bar clamp stems for sale anymore?

looking for a good lightweight one.

I know you can use shims to make the newer ones fit but I’d prefer a more elegant approach =)

The 1" steerer might be a tough one to find…but there’s no shame (or harm) in using a 1-1/8" to 1" shim in a stem.

But Tom, think about the extra milligrams!!

There is some NOS of Thompson 1" at J&B importers. Have your LBS call them.

Yes. On ebay.

But Tom, think about the extra milligrams!!

What extra? If the stem had a 1" steerer hole instead of the 1-1/8" hole, the shim weight would be “built in” to the stem.

Besides…you must mistake me for a weight-weenie or something

That depends - you ride them fanchy schmancy new Speedplay’s?

The outer diameter should be less for a 1" steerer stem!

should be more aero too!

Well…then why not go for a quill stem?

I finally found a couple, deep within ebay:

A single Cinelli titanium one, for $150…a bit too rich and only one size available.

And some guy in flagstaff who makes steel ones in all sorts of sizes.

sweet =)

I wonder how many pounds it weighs : /

I found nine. You need to check back occasionally as folks who have NOS parts like this will periodically post. I saw 90, 105, 110, 120, and 130.

http://www.icyclesusa.com/ several in a couple sizes…and a few colours.

i don’t know how serious you were about the weight thing, but any stem old enough to use a 1" standard is going to weigh a ton compared to a good modern stem like a ritchey wcs.

I agree. I just bought a 90mm and 105mm Titec stem from icycles. The 90mm weighs 6.19oz vs 4.91oz of an Oval 100mm I had lying around.

Just buy a Syntace F99 stem with Ti bolts and the 1 - 1 1/8" shim and it will be fine. My 105mm stem with ti bolts is 98g and I machined my shim down to 10g so 108g for a 1" stem in 26.0

You will not get them any lighter than that.

Define lightweight. I just got a “kelly handmade steel” one off ebay for a little project I am working on. The 11cm, 1 inch, 26.0 one was 166 grams. Not super lightweight, but not a porker, either.

Yeah I was thinking of going with one of those, but the bars I have specify 2 bolts minimum for the clamp :frowning:

I’ve given in and gone with a ritchey wcs + shim

There is no shame for sure, but I prefer…

Get an additional 1" to 1-1/8" shim and put it on the steerer first. Then add the correct 1-1/8" carbon spacers under the 1-1/8 stem (with shim of course). This is what I have done.

It looks way better than uing 1" spacers on the 1" steerer as the stem connection (1-1/8" stem plus the shim) looks too “beefy”. using the shim and 1-1/8" spacers makes it look more at one with itself. IMHO at least.

Using a 1-1/8 stem with 26mmm bar connection is alot easier to find than the 1" version.

What I want to know, is why all the tri bike mfr’s have gone with 1-1/8" steerers anyway. For agurment sake, there is no need for us trigeeks to have any call for the extra stiffness of the larger steerer. Roadies? yeah sure(in their dreams as only a few sprinters will ever need or notice the difference), but not us trigeeks. I would have thought that having a slightly narrower head tube (still sculpted down, between the headset bearings) would have made a nicer, better faster aero front end.

Maybe I’ve just missed something on this one?

I think the larger steerer size was done to accommodate carbon steerers.

just a guess.

but yeah it doesn’t make sense aerodynamically

and spacers?

SPACERS?

actually I don’t know I may need some, haven’t built it up yet!
