Are Reynolds DV clinchers really the ultimate racing wheels?

My friends all say that the Reynolds DV clincher is the best possible wheelset for racing. They say when combined with the low rolling resistance, lightness and aerodynamics, nothing can compare.

They think I should switch from my Zipp 999 wheelset to the Reynolds DV clinchers.

Anyone want to debate that.

Bontrager Race-Lites are the ultimate race wheels. It just so happens that I have an extra pair lying around, so I might be generous and give them to you on an even trade for your 999’s.

Once your friends have brainwashed you into buying a set of Reynolds DVs they’ll come back and offer to buy your Zipp 999s really cheap since you don’t need them any more. If they don’t then I will be able to take the 999s off your hands. Just PM me and we can find an arrangement.

Bontrager Race-Lites? I haven’t considered those.

It sounds like your friends aren’t really all that in the know.
Wheels have little to do with rolling resistance, it’s the tires.
Yes they are an aero section, but more aero than a zipp 808 front wheel, no. And your zipp disk is going to be much faster than just about any spoked rear wheel.

I don’t think they meant that the reynolds have a lower rolling resistance but instead that clinchers have a lower rolling resistance than tubulars.

For an all around race wheelset I bet the Stratus DV is up there with the best. When i say all around i mean for crit, RR, and TT.

If we are talking about JUST time trials (and triathlons) then there are a lot of faster wheels out there (in my opinion).

maybe for the road, but you are not going to best a disk for tri.

According to the blackwell rep I talked to the 200mm rear will be FASTER than a disc.

Now thats funny. On the blackwell site they have this text for the description of their disc: (note the FINAL STEP comment)

“Disc wheels are fast, we wanted to offer every available option for more speed to the riders, so we have a great disc wheel. Super light at just 960gr. Extremely stiff laterally. This wheel is the final step in the search for speed.”

Reynolds probably has (one of) the best wheelsets around. Not the cheapest. But the best. Still you will go crazy when you try to true them or replace a spoke. You need a special tool to attach/adjust the proper reynolds’ nipples. Here in Europe it’s like the hardest tool to get in bike shops, online stores, etc. I tried to order it from the US but the guys forwarded me to the French dealer who didn’t have it in stock. A real bummer.

I’d stick with the Zipp’s.
