Are Bontrager R1 tires terrible or do I have back luck?

I’ve had a Speed Concept for about a month now. In that time I’ve had 8 flats on it, all caused by very small punctures/thorns. I’ve gotten a flat every 23 miles on the bike (I did the math). I don’t think I’ve gotten that many flats in the last 10 years of riding.

So, are these tires really that bad? or have I just had terrible luck suddenly? I guess I just want to know if I should pick up some new tires for training or what.

Is it predominantly one wheel more than the other, or is it distributed evenly front and back?

Back wheel only, I actually swapped the tires around but it didn’t help.

Rim tape okay? Nothing stuck in the rim somewhere that’s popping your tubes?

Where are the holes in the tube? Tread side? Sidewall? Rim side? Knowing that will give you a clue to the problem.

All on the top, they’re all caused by tiny thorns going through the top of the tread, all slightly off center.

Rim tape is great, no pinch flats, just little punctures.

Got another flat on my way to work this morning, I swear the tread is like 1mm thick and made of paper.

I’ve already ordered a pair of 25c Gatorskins to replace these things.

Good luck with the gatorskins. I use R3 for training and R4 with latex tubes for racing. R1’s are the thinnest Bonty tire.
