If i am buying new rims can I use the same skewers from my old rims? they are not the same brand rims. also can i just take the cogs from one wheel and put on the new one? sorry , i just dont know much about equipment. i just dont want to get stuck having to buy all new stuff. any help would be greatly appreciated
The skewers must match!
Color coordinate, and never, ever run a skewer made by a wheel company on a different companies wheel (i.e. Zipp skewers on Hed wheels.)
It’s just tacky. Using a name brand skewer on a stock wheel isn’t so cool either, but it is forgivable.
My insight on image.
Here’s irony for you. I was just installing my new wheels, and the skewer(which wasn’t in the box and I had to have them send me) seized, then snapped when I was trying to loosen it. So I am now committing that most heinous offense of running a different brand skewer and wheel. But it’s an emergency!
One. I am not style man. Style isn’t the same as being cool. Style is an ancient form of being cool. Pretty much living in the past (which is fine, just not to the extent he takes it too.) Plus, I could never butcher my haircut like he seems to luv to do.
Two. Ride fast in the meentime and make sure no photographers get to you and we’ll forget about it.
I use whatever skewers I wish. I love the old American Classic skewer, and I use it on a lot of things. These days, however, the Mavic Wintech skewer supercedes whatever fashion skewer I like to use.
The coolest skewer I have found is one that is cheaply available in your LBS’ QBP catalogue, is aero as hell, and is just cool. One caveat: it must be used with a hex key, which makes it MIGHTY inconvenient if you flat.
Bunny, I’ve got a pair of skewers from Nuke Proof that are like the Am Classic screw ones but with a little handle welded on. Titanium, very light and aero, and at least as easy to use as any other skewer. Am I the only one who’s bothered by the monster skewers that come with wheels these days? I hate those things.
You deserve at least one helpful post. You should be able to interchange skewers and cassetes(provided you aren’t switching from an old 7 speed or something like that).
Yes, you can use the skewers. I actually like my Rampy Record skewers from my old 7 speed stuff from years ago. They seem to fit fine and hold better than any other skewer I’ve had.
You can use any skewer - just don’t put the front one on the rear ;->
Seriously though - you may have problems interchanging cassettes. Sometimes a small spacer ring (10cents??) is required to move the cassette into he correct alignment. Try this at home, before you arrive at the race site.
Bamboo definitely looks cooler, but you run the risk of breakage and splinters. I like to soak them for a while before cooking so they don’t light up right away. Stainless are easier to use and clean, but can add a metallic taste when using a vinegar based marinade.
I use the little hex ones on my tri bike. I do not need to pull my wheel off during a race, so why have the extra weight/drag. Flat tire, use the tufo sealant.
Plus I can then use my torque wrench to make sure they are tighten to spec.
