I run with a pair of $50 (or $60–same thing) Asics. I’ve used them without problem before, but when I run hills with them, I always seem to come out with a blister on my left arch (my right arch is fine). This morning, I ran two miles of uphill and two miles of downhill. I had to stop running in the last half mile because I could feel this blister coming on.
And I was wearing two pairs of socks already, so that probably won’t be the solution.
I’m not certain, but I think my left foot may rotate inward when I’m running. As much as I’d like it to not do that, I have no idea how to fix it. I’m a mid-foot striker, and my right ankle is substantially less flexible than my left (owing to a nasty ankle injury a few years back). Do I need to do some ankle stability work on my left ankle?
Same happens to me too… not necessarily on hills, but anytime I run 1hr or more. Left arch. I’m wondering if my shoes have a high arch. They are getting up there in their usable life, so I’ll be looking at other shoes that will remedy it. Is doubling the socks supposed to help?
Sweet. I may be in pain after I wear them, but at least I’ll save a buck.
I know Asics have always seemed to have a bit more arch support than Nikes or some other running shoes. Still, I have to wonder if it’s just related to poor manufacturing if so many of us are having the same problem.
I just realized I didn’t answer your question. Yes, doubling socks is supposed to reduce the friction, but it’s obviously not the solution for me.
Short of buying the book, I may just invest in a pair of Nikes (less arch), or try sticking electrical tape over the place where the blister occurs since it always seems to happen in the same place. I’ll probably die of electrical tape poisoning. Wouldn’t that be ironic.
I had the same problem every now and then. I run with out socks. I started using body glide on my arches before I run and have not had a problem since.
I also run in Asics 2120s and have been running in this Ascis series for about 6 years or so. Never had any problems till the 2120s where I ended up with a huge blister on my left arch after runs of about 90 minutes. I was taping my foot prior to every run and then decided that I shouldn’t have to do that. On a whim I bough some Nike’s and problem solved – no more blister. I have only assumed that the new Asics have somehow changed the design of the arch/footbed something.
It IS a bit wacky that a bunch of us have had issues with the same brand of shoe on the same part of the same foot. I’m starting to think Asics aren’t as fantastic as they used to be.
I’ll be trying out the Body Glide thing first, but I’m definitely going to start shopping around for a deal on Nike shoes.
ditto on the body glide - to treat a current blister - Duoderm. Should be able to get that at a drugstore, it is a soft layer that has some topical antibiotic or something that is magical at making blisters heal quickly (particularly if the top layer of skin has peeled off them).
