Aquasphere Kaiman goggles

I see in a previous poll, lots of people use them - but what color lens? Do the amber or blue lenses help the bouys stand out?

Currently I’m using TYR velocity goggles, they work fine in the pool, but I can’t see well sighting in a race. While we’re at it, any suggestions to keep lenses from fogging would be useful.

I would like to know this as well…

Also, does anyone have any tips for someone wearing contacts that will be doing his first salt water swim race? I’ve been wearing contacts in all of my previous fresh water swim tris and it’s been okay when the goggles have leaked a little bit… i’m concerned about what will happen if my goggles leak in salt water.

thanks.

use them love them - have clear, tinted and amber - amber is the most versatile and the one I wear the most
.

I’ve swum saltwater with contacts, I crank my goggles on so tight for races that they don’t leak, and salt water was no different from fresh.

I have 2 pair, smoke/tinted, and clear.

I vastly prefer the clear for o/w swimming (plus they’re newer, so the lenses are less scratched up), the only time I wouldn’t wear them would be for a venue where you would get the rising sun directly in your eyes. Never tried blue or amber lenses, can’t speak to that, sorry.

There are several anti-fog treatments you can buy at almost any online tri or swim store. Or, you could use watered-down baby shampoo. Or saliva. (I personally never had much luck with the latter, so I spent the whopping $5 or whatever on the ‘official’ anti-fog stuff.)

One drop in each lense prior to swimming, rinse out, then go.

my gut feeling would be that amber lenses wouldn’t help that much in spotting orange/red buoys - is this correct?

Clear, tinted and amber, huh? I think I’ll order a pair of amber and see how I like the goggles, since you say they are versatile. I like my red cycling lenses a lot, so that makes sense.

I currently carry clear, smoke and mirrorized goggles to my races. I use mirrorized if I’m dealing with an angle that makes me try to sight into a rising sun. I thought the smoke would be useful in dark water, so my eyes wouldn’t have to readjust so much to brighter light when I sight, but I find they are usually too dark to see the bouys well, and clear work better. Then again, the sun can be just right and nail you when you breathe and give you a headache. I’m a bilateral breather, but I feel unbalanced breathing to one side over time.

I have the amber. I’ve never felt like they were too dark, but they’re dark enough to be helpful when the rising sun is in your eyes on race morning.

the amber have never created difficulties sighting any color bouys.

one member of our club wearing dark lensed goggles (unsure of brand) had a near impossible time at a recent race spotting a turn marker which was either yellow or green

I second this…I have all three, but I wear my amber lenses the most.

I wore the mirrored lenses at Wildflower and actually thought they were too dark…it was hard to see the buoys.

I have amber. The only difficulty I have is when masters workout is written with a red marker  For open water, amber works well for both cloudy and sunny conditions.

I use an anti-fog cloth. I think I got it in a race goody bag a couple of years ago. I use it about once a month.

Most of the buoys I see are red/orange, so that is a very good question. Would amber lenses make them more or less obvious?

And to add to the confusion, the body of the goggles is available in both clear and darker colors. Would it be useful to use the clear body, to allow more light in for visibility, even if one is trying to see through tinted lenses? Or would a dark body “tunnel” the vision forward for better sighting?

Don’t know about amber, but blue tinted lenses make it almost impossible to see orange/red bouys.

The amber ones are best for early morning. They cut down on the glare of the sun off the water. The blue ones are for bright days and also help with the sun. The tinted ones also help with the sun, but tend to darken everytyhing.

I wear teh amber ones for races.

So what color goggle body do you amber lens users prefer? Clear or colored?

Not sure you have an option when it comes to frame color, unless they have some new, fancy model out. I’ve used all three lens tints (or lack thereof) depending on the circumstances. Just bought amber for Alcatri (alcatraz for amateurs, 10/15). LOVE the goggles. There are the only ones I found that will fit my melon - I mean, very large head - correctly. The silicone frames tend to yellow rather quickly, but by the time they get real ugly, it’s time for a new pair anyway.

Frames for amber lenses come in transparent, black and… cherry.

If frame choices weren’t available before now, what color is working for people that they currently have?

I guess I never knew there was an option. I think my amber lens’ body are clear.

I have the amber lenses with a clear frame. Also have the mirrored, tinted lenses with a black frame and a clear lens/clear frame pair.

Never use the clear lenses. 90% of the time, I use the ambers…unless I’m swimming in full sun (a lunchtime swim) in which case, i use the tinted.
