The winds to Hawi are notorious but they don’t say you can’t ride a disc.
I’d double check that, the rules should say no discs and if they don’t they will probably be corrected by race day. Check with the RD just in case, but I know they aren’t allowing them. If they were allowed I’d be on mine in a second, well I’d bring a back up wheel just in case…

It depends on your age group. If you are in Tai’s age group you can use a disc. If you are in my age group you cannot.

I think it also said it needed to be on your lower back?
I did notice that it said winds can be 5-35 mph. 35??? Not would not be fun unless purely a tailwind.
yeah, it said lower back so we all just wore our number belts backward last year. I think they enforced it but can’t really remember. I’ll try to find out. The winds are usually lower but when they are high they are pretty much allways crosswinds and they are gusty bastards too, rarely ever sustained and that’s why they are dangerous. I did an olympic out there a couple of years ago along the LESS windy section of the highway and we all cranked out to the turnaround over 30mph and then crawled back doing 12-15=P

im leaving for hawaii next thursday, but im coming from oz… im also staying down in kona so have to hire a car i guess… you guys are right about 35mph winds… that would suck, but we are all in the same boat!

Hey Linda, I’m shooting it as close as I can and coming in 11:00 on Saturday:) Just in time for packet pick up, assembling the bike and a nap. I have to round up a rear wheel for the race since my disc has been banished. I just put a really really cool custom decal set on the disc that I wanted to show you, but I guess it’ll wait till next time. Anything you need from the big big city here??
You will be cutting it close. Hopefully there will be no airport delays. If there is…make sure you have my cell number and contact us asap as I’m sure you won’t be the only one coming over that morning. I’ll email you my number.

I’m up late because Konawaena (pea’s high school) was playing Punahou (my high school) for the girls state basketball tourney. Went double overtime, just ended.

My bike boxes aren’t oversize though (custom) so I don’t have to worry about that much. But I just came back form Xterra Temecula in CA and we set a new record missing both our original flight there and then missed it again on the way back!
