Anyone used a Dyson fan for trainer session cooling?

We have a space-constrained apartment in Hong Kong so need something that both looks good, is small, yet produces enough air to cool bike trainer sessions. I already set the aircon to 18C but need much more air movement to last much more than 45mins - hour (especially with almost 100% humidity!!).

Been looking at the Dyson AM07 Tower fan. Would love the input of anyone who has one, and especially comment on the amount of air it moves.

I’m happy with mine but it’s still not perfect. Perfect would be one of those hovercraft sized fans…

Go with a vornado instead. Higher CFM, and still fairly quiet.

The AM07 is not tall enough to cool your head when you’re on your bike. I use a AM08 and I have the top of that is pointing upwards slightly.

I’m based in the humidity of Singapore and when I sit on the turbo trainer with the AM08 on full blast it does the job.

I also wear a head band to save on the mopping up afterwards!

Lived in Singapore for almost 7 years so appreciate you know what I’m dealing with! I also do the sweat bands on head and wrists, with just bibs, and after a decade my wife still laughs at me every time. Thanks

I started out looking for something like the Vornado but something a bit more design/stylish is desired.

Design is clearly the only downside with the Vornado. I have one of their most badass models, 728 or whatever it was called. I almost never put it on level III, and level I is better than any random fan without doing ANY sound. Very cool, pun intended.

I bet that anyone who sets their mind to it can modify the Vornado to look OK. The plastic cover is just that, a plastic cover. Inside is just the powerful motor and the blades.

x2 for the Vornado. Although I’m not in 100% humidity like you (I lived in HK for 10 years, so I know what that feels like), I live in NYC in a tiny apartment, so I understand the space constraints. I also sweat more than anyone else I know. I bought a Vornado 660 and love it for a couple of reasons.

  1. It’s the quietest fan I’ve ever used. Although I don’t have first-hand experience with the Dyson models, my understanding based on reading reviews is that the Vornado is substantially quieter. Makes watching TV while riding a lot easier. On level 1 it’s barely audible and still puts out a good amount of air (although I use it max while riding).
  2. The cone of air that it puts out is super concentrated. I actually set it up a few feet behind me while I’m riding (my eyes get dry if it’s in front of me) and feel like all of the moving air is hitting my body.
  3. It works well as a whole room fan, and you can kind of “hide” the fan in a corner pointing toward the ceiling in the opposite corner. It circulates air quite effectively around the rest of the room, even away from the direct beam of air. I know this because I can see the dust bunnies blowing around the floor while I ride (I need to clean our apartment clearly).
  4. It’s still expensive, but a lot cheaper than the Dyson!

I’m not associated with Vornado in any way - just happen to like the fan.

What’s the need for a quiet fan? Just curious, my trainer (KK Road Machine) is louder than the 30" industrial fan at maximum speed I use…

It is cumulative, even if the individual fan volume compared to that of the trainer is a lower db you have still increased the level in the room as a whole. If you then need to crank up your tv or music higher to hear it over that you are again just increasing the overall sound levels.

FYI…deal of the day:

I recently got fed up with the fans i had, tossed up between paying a lot for a quiet fan that moved a decent amount of air, or getting some blue tooth headphones and a drywall fan.
I went with the latter.

Those industrial fans move more air than I know what to do with, and the headphones mean volume isn’t even a factor. Honestly I dont know if i could go back to wimpy fans after the wind tunnel i’m used to.

Agreed. Although I like it hot, I do have a drywall fan; a small one, and it is amazing, and fairly quiet.

I have an AM06. It puts out a decent amount of air but it would not cut it for me alone as a trainer fan. I sweat buckets during trainer sessions and I usually have a forward facing fan and another to cool my back, I usually use the Dyson for the rear guard.

I prefer my trainer sessions in near hurricane strength wind and the Dyson definitely can’t supply that. It’s probably good for most though.

Hell, I live in Calgary, we do NOT have humidity, ever. We are drier than the Sahara (well, in winter we are). But, I still go through a sweat band on my head every 40-50 minutes and that includes rotating them. With the fan on. I line up the headbands in advance of my ride and have a spot to hang them when they are saturated so I can sit up, take off the wet one, put on a dry one and keep going.

My workouts are usually a 2 sweatband or 3 sweatband workout which is how I measure them.

Rondal - What brand of BT headphones did you get? I’m assuming I would need waterproof or water-resistant models given how much I sweat.

What MrTopher said. With the fan off, I can listen to the TV at a given volume level (I also have a KK Road Machine). When I turn the fan on, I have to increase the TV volume quite a bit, so a quieter fan means less fan noise AND less TV noise. Since I live in NYC, the trainer is set up in our living room, which is immediately adjacent to our bedroom, so blasting the volume on the TV has some downsides for my wife and kid.

I have four different Vornado units and while they are good, none are as good for cooling on the trainer as the Lasko blower fans:

.

I’ve been using a Lasko for the last couple months. It is unbelievably great. So great I actually wore a long sleeve jersey in the basement a couple times this winter and my new dread on the trainer has been being too cold, not too hot. But, it is definitely not worthy of permanent display in a living room

2nd Lasko. I use mine on low. Fairly loud and not styling, but does the job.
