a bunch of my paddling friends are using coconut water for hydration and nutrition during their long distance races and practices. anyone here try it for training or races and if so how did it work. thanks for any input! they claim its high in electrolytes, low in fat and doesnt upset their stomach.
I usually drink what they provide for races but I recover with coconut water all of the time. It has never upset by stomach so I bet I could easily drink it while working out.
Yup, the stuff is awesome. The only thing I don’t like about it is when it gets warm it is quite gross.
Where do you buy the stuff…Whole Foods, Fresh Market, any grocery store? How much does it cost?
thanks - g
It is pricey, I think I paid about 7 or 8 dollars for a litre the other day. I bought it at a health food store similar to Whole Foods.
Yeah I get it at Whole Foods.
They’ve had it at some of the local sprint races, but for after the event, not during.
Pretty tasty, seems to go down easily w/ no gut issues.

This company has plain, and 2 flavored versions.
I know a couple people who use it exclusively during training/racing. A bit pricey. And they add sea salt to it to up the sodium they are taking in.
Well not during races but during a hike about 2 weeks ago in Dominican Republic.
We went for a ~4h hike and even though we started @ 8AM it was pretty hot and the local/guide shows up with nothing.
Nutrition comprised of fresh Mango and Guava grabbed directly from the trees/ground.
Hydration was Coconut water…
I kept thinking during the whole thing about our Infinit mixes, gels, etc… and how we make things so much more complicated that they really are…

amazon has coupon codes every now and then for the Vita Coco and ONE brands. They carry Zico as well. You can use their subscribe and save to save an additional 15%. It’s good stuff and great for nights when you’ve had a little too much to drink, not that any of us here do that since we’re all training all the time.
The ONE brand uses younger coconuts and has a slightly less sweet taste compared to Vita Coco who uses slightly more mature coconuts. I use it paddling as well and actually turned on a bunch to ordering it from Amazon. You can also check out the small Asian grocery stores who might have it on the cheap. I usually fill a water bottle with ice and pour in the coconut water till its filled.
There’s no added sugar and yes it is very low in fat.
Right now they have a special on the Zico brand. Enter coupon code “ZICC5455” at checkout to save 20%. You can save an extra 15% on top by using the subscribe and save to boot.
They have three types at the moment. Plain, mango and passion fruit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_p_4_0?rh=n%3A16310101%2Cn%3A!16310211%2Ck%3Azico+coconut+water%2Cp_n_special_merchandising_browse-bin%3A492448011%2Cp_4%3AZico&bbn=16310101&keywords=zico+coconut+water&ie=UTF8&qid=1250648505&rnid=203034011
I can’t verify this, but I have heard in the past that coconut water is a constipator. That might be a good thing.
They don’t make a carbon cage to fit this.

I would think it is the opposite. It can contain 2.6g of fiber for every 1 cup. That would be a lot of fiber over an Ironman distance race.
