Anyone tried a treadmill desk?

I’m an IM-type with a career that requires me to write all day, every day, on a computer. Given the recent news reports on the health effects of sitting for prolonged periods (even if one is otherwise active), I got to thinking about perhaps using a standing desk or treadmill desk like the following:

I have a treadmill at home that doesn’t get much use because I run outside, so I could probably make it happen financially.

Has anyone tried a standing or treadmill desk in conjunction with voluminous training? Is it a net positive or just the equivalent of junk miles that inhibit recovery while not really doing anything beneficial? I’d envision just walking at 1 mph or so while I do my daily thing.

Cheers,

Damon

I’ve been using one for 18 months now and it rocks. At first I built one over my True treadmill, but it was hard to work at all day long due to the limited workspace and after about 6 months I decided to buy one. I looked at the walkstation first but simply could not afford it at $5000 and ended up with a treaddesk at $1500. I love it and two other people in our offices now have them and our employer has decided to pay for half now that they see the many benefits.

If you have not had a chance to try one out, they are ideal for those of us stuck at a desk all day. It is by no means a cardio workout. I usually walk in my office at 1.5mph (which I am doing right now) but it is so slow that I can do everything that I would normally do sitting down but I am constantly moving, which is great.

I believe these will become very common in 5-10 years as more and more benefits are revealed. I highly recommend it.

I have actually purchased a Lifespan Fitness TR1200 and have been extremely happy with it so far. If you click on the link, you can read up on my full review of the Lifespan vs Trek Desk vs other desks that I tried in the year before I finally decided to make a purchase.
