Anyone taking coenzyme Q-10 suppliment?

Opinion?

I don’t know, but as a pharmaceutical purchasing agent, I’ve been buying ALOT more of it lately. It’s an anti-oxidant, used in a lot of anti-aging products.

Yeah, 100mg a day. I get it from a friend who’s company manufactures the stuff. At first I had a feeling that it improved recovery (these things are hard to tell). Would I take it if I had to pay for it? Not sure. What I have read about the stuff makes it sound good, but at the moment it’s pretty expensive (especially here). I suppose it can’t hurt, but like all supplements you never really know if it’s worth it.

i took it for a little while and then fell off the wagon as usual. i don’t really know what it did.

I’ve been taking it for about 10 years and I think it is helpful. I never really noticed anything different when I started taking it, but I noticed when I stopped. When I stop I get the same feeling as when I’m overtrained.

I guess the coenzyme Q-10 is one that is naturally produced in your body, and helps with the heart muscle…something with elasticity but I’m not sure.

It seems to work for me and until I hear it is bad for the body, I’ll keep using it.

I’ve been taking it for 6 yrs.
All I know is that I haven’t gotten sick once since I’ve been on it.
Even during our New England winters.

I’m sold on it.

I’ve been taking it during the periods in which I’ve trained regularly and strenuously between the ages of about 50 and now 62. More than most supplements, I think I feel its effects in allowing me to recover quickly enough for still one more workout later today or sometime tomorrow–particularly regarding muscle soreness.

I take it on Doc’s advice because I also take Lipitor. Lipitor does something that blocks the natural production of CoQ10, and the supplement helps to ensure that I don’t get the muscle damage that some Lipitor users experience.

I have no idea if it actually works, but my doc said take it (he’s a runner) so I do.

I’ve been taking it about a year and have developed telepathic powers, written several poetic masterpieces and inceased my earnings by 75%.

Seriously though, it has helped with my recovery, boosted my immunity, and seems to give me more energy.

You almost did strike me as a reasonable person (until I read your second sentence)

o.k. here you get my take:

Co-Q is naturally a transporter that shuttles electrons in your energy generating system in the mitochondria of all your cells. Oral intake will make it very difficult to influence the distant Co-Q pools inside your cells inside the mitochondria of your body.

I can act as pro- and anti-oxidant everywhere in your body. This means, under certain (genetic conditions that are not pathological per se) these molecules can actually increase free-radical damage. Correct and individual dosage as well as targeted delivery of antioxidants is always a problem (as is their nature-identical synthesis) and overdose (which are rarely “what the doctor recommends” as “safe”) are not beneficial for your health (or your wallet).

As a somewhat knowledgeable person I personally have come to the conclusion that it is better not to mess with my intrinsic balance of anti-oxidant defenses. Just think of disturbance of a natural and balanced equilibrium (which is established regardless how you stress your system-cells are built to handle it). I however try to supply my cells with enough “raw-materials” to beef up on certain anti-oxidant defense “pathways” if needed by my body. This can be easily done by eating a healthy diet with a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Since your psyche has a big influence on your overall well-being as well as your immune system, Co-Q may actually benefit you (as would any placebo). Just not in a way that can be proven in a biological way.

For what it is worth.
