I’m thinking of some creative ways to try to cut weight on my tri bike. Since I’m almost never in the big ring on a 53/39 setup, I was thinking about just using like a 44 or 46 up front with an 11/28 in the back (I use the 28 on the crazy hills where I live). I would cut a chain ring, front derailleur and a shifter out of the mix by making that move!
Anyone else run only one ring in front? How does it work for you?

There are a few threads on this subject.
Personally, I ran a 1x11 most of last year for training (rolling terrain) and racing (flat to rolling, including IM Louisville) with a combination of 52t + 11/32 Di2 system. On the front I used an X Sync SRAM ring (narrow/wide) and a mid-cage 6870 RD.
I didn’t do it to save weight, I did it to make my setup a bit more aerodynamic. I would not run a 1 x system if I wasn’t capable of removing the FD mount. That would look hideous.
James, did you use a Shimano cassette? Also was the 52T on a 130bcd or 110bcd crank? I have a Quarq on an otherwise 6870 groupset Dimond that I am considering going 1X with a 52T chainring for IMTX.
It was a Shimano 6800 cassette. Also a 130bcd Quarq with the 52t ring.
In a perfect world I would have had a 110bcd and swapped between a 52t and a 50t depending on race/training conditions. At Louisville I wish I had been able to run a 50t + 11/32.
Thanks. Yeah, the out-and-back (and a few other spots) at Louisville would have been a grind for me with a 52x32 combo. Running the 50T would probably be the safer bet for me too. I have a 110bcd Quarq on my road bike and a 130bcd Quarq on my tri bike, so I could go either way. It would be great if Best Bike Split told you how much time you would theoretically spend above or below a certain speed within the suggested power range.
1x11 is the Next Big Thing. Less weight, more aero, simpler, plus it’s a hook to get all of us to invest in new equipment ;<). I’d be surprised if Cervelo, Felt, QR, C’dale, etc. do not start offering 1x11 OEM options within the next season or two. This is not the first thread to discuss this topic, plus pros like Rapp are winning races on 1x11 (see Mt. Tremblant). Where they lead the rest of us will follow.
Yea. 54x11-32 here. SRAM x-sync ring and standard long cage force RD. It’s so good I don’t even think about it when I am riding. All the right TT gears with enough to climbing/bail out gears for training.
Thinking of doing a 52x11-28 on a crit specific bike.
I switched my TT bike over to 1x11 a few months ago with a SRAM 52 X-Sync ring, Force 1 long cage RD, and a 11-36 cassette. Previously ran Osymetric 52/42 front and 11-28 rear for the past 2 seasons. I got the opportunity to ride it outside this week and it was great! No chain rub, no trimming the FD, and everything worked flawlessly.
FIBRE-LYTE will make you one but it is not a true narrow/wide but I have been using their single rings for years with no issues on my MTB and ROAD builds when running 1 X 10 set ups.
The cool thing is that you can either get a light weight rings or a full aero ring that will work. Also if you have a crankset that has a removable spider, you can have them make you a spiderless front ring like they did for me.
I just have to see if I am going to remove the hanger or not but will test for a while first.

Have you noticed a difference with the aero ring vs non aero ring?
