New mountain bike time. I just sold my long in the tooth Ibis Mojo. Looking to replace with a 29" trail bike with a bit more travel. I like the looks of the Canyon Spectral and it is a lot of bike for the money.
Anyone have one? Thoughts?
My wife has a Canyon gravel bike so I’m broadly familiar with the purchase process and the frame quality.
Not exactly Canyon Spectral, but I’ve just recently purchased my first ever MTB. I’ve bought the cheapest new Canyon Neuron Al 5, 140/140, 1x 12s, dropper post. 1250 CHF, so roughly 1400 USD.
I’m giving it a try, with a primary objective to have more fun while riding.
That would be one hell of a bike. My wife had a Spectral for years and loved it. The only thing to bear in mind is that appears to be the older frame that doesn’t have the UDH derailleur hanger. That needn’t be an issue, but does mean that you can’t run the SRAM Transmission drivetrain on it in the future - just something to be aware of. Will be one hell of a bike though, and heaps of fun.
Ooh nice this is not helping my itchy buying finger! Really fancy one of these for some long rides, marathon racing and trying to chase my
Kids at trail centres!
Just saw this. I have a Spectral ON and love it. Good suspension and great battery life. I ride mostly with guys about 20 years younger than me so battery was the way to go for me. I do have a giant trance as well for easier local riding.
Just saw this as well. I have a Canyon Spectral 6 125 in 27.5 and really dig it. Well-optioned from the Canyon outlet, agreed it’s a great bike for the price. Before this I was riding a Giant Stance 2 in 27.5. The Canyon is definitely a heavier bike but I knew that going in. We have some punchy hills at local trails like Alafia and Balm Boyette down here near Tampa and the Stance was more of a climber - the Spectral more of a sender. I do all of my bike maintenance so was never concerned about taking it to a shop. Would definitely buy Canyon again.
FYI Canyon’s run a little big - I’m on a S frame with Canyon and M with everyone else that I’ve ridden. The S was recommended to me by their online fitter and I also reached out to their support team before purchasing.
I went a different route and got a Revel Rascal V2 with XO Eagle. So far, so good. It’s a fun bike. 1300mm rear, 140 front. Neutral progressive geo, nothing overly long and low. It feels really good on front range trails. I’ve only had it a week and I’m still getting suspension dialed. I pulled the trigger a bit sooner than planned because of the tariff madness. The color is cool … they call it pinot gnar … it’s a dark metallic purple. In direct sunlight, it sparkles like a bass boat.
What did he have break? I did have an issue recently, the drive side chain stay sheered in half. There’s quite a few reports going back at least six or seven years of these Giant triangles snapping at the chain stay. I don’t think it’s only giant, maybe there’s something with this particular design as it sounded like a couple other manufacturers might’ve had issues as well.
I took it back to the bike shop where I bought it and they did a warranty through giant, I didn’t have to pay for the triangle it was just a little labor for replacement. I have to say I would be hesitant to buy another one with this experience, but the warranty process was really easy for what it’s worth.
The joint right below the seat post, the handle bars, and joint where the head tube meets the frame. He’s pretty aggressive, but so are some of the other guys we ride with and they have had not problems at all with theirs. (Canyon, Revel, Trek, Scott)
Yes. Hopefully I have no issues with it otherwise I’m SOL. Sounds like it took everyone at the company by surprise. I know a sales guy that works/worked at Revel and he swears he had no clue. I don’t care about riding a bike from a dead brand. There’s a certain cache to that. I also have a Guerrila Gravity (Pedalhead hardtail) so I guess riding defunct CO brands is my kink.
A buddy of mine went to Revel last year and spec’d out a bike. He did a ton of research and due to his size and body proportions, the Revel was the way to go. He has loved it so far and is significantly faster than on his previous standard spec bikes. I’ll see him for the first time since the company folded next Wednesday.
