His new book “Fit Soul, Fit Body” came out Monday. Anyone get it? How is it?
No, frankly, I wasn;t even aware it was out. I’d like to check it out. Is it on Amazon? I like his writing and enjoyed his previous triathlon training book from many years ago. Even though the book is dated much of what is in there is still relevant.
its interesting how some athletes can be very meditative and calm and thoughtful in their approach to UTTER DREAM CRUSHING DOMINATION (mark allen)
and others, like lance armstrong do it with pure atheistic, calculated, jock RAGE
and people continue to think that certain attitudes, mind games, mindsets are critical to winning.
I still think its all about the engine and the hard work =)
but mark allens indian shaman story cracks me up
what!?
It is on Amazon. He co-wrote it with his shaman healer. Could be interesting.

I fail to see the distinction. They both have their minds right to win, just in different ways. If you could have planted the seeds of doubt into MA’s head he could have cracked just like anybody else.
edit: is anybody else looking forward to the day somebody says something obnoxious on camera during an ironman so jackmott can get a new saying?
Theres plenty of examples of people who had doubt and won anyway. Mark Allen himself had doubt until the shaman helped him out. I need that.
and yes, I also need a new catch phrase.
suggestions?

I’ve also seen his retreats advertised with a fellow named Brent Seguda if I recall correctly (which I may not be). They sounded very interesting too. The entire interface of endurance sports and Shamanism seems intrguing. It is interesting how ancient and modern cultures use endurance sports as a form of catharsis or meditation as a means to this end, or as the end in itself.
Fascinating.
I’m getting the book.
Wow, I didn;t realize there is a foreward by Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. That is a favorite all-time book of mine with my favorite all time quote:
“Between stimulus and response is our greatest freedom: Choice”.
I love that quote. Awesome.
I’ll let you know when it arrives. Just ordered one on Amazon (now $16).

don’t get a new catch phrase or I’ll crush your dreams.
actually if you don’t watch out…the dream crusher might come after you…then you’ll be sorry…he’ll ride like hell and drop out.

also one of my favorite books, and quotes. covey is great. i mentioned brad kearns in another thread, his book deals with that intersection of endurance and lifestyle philosophy.
This book is a very great read. Not only can reading it and applying some of the principles learned make you a better triathlete but a better all-around person also!
I highly recommend the book! Mark and Brant have done a great job.
But I think following Marks “training plan” in the book won’t make you very fast though, maybe healthy instead! I’d only try it when I can no longer move…
hard work is 99% mental. Everyone can do the hard training for a day or two but to keep going at it for 10+ years isnt physical… it s a mental game with a will to need to succed and both mark and Lance have that i commun. This all sport thing is simply a very high level university in the domain of mental toughness. The physical come along but it s definitly a mental game in sport. People dont physicaly give up, or rarely, it s the mental that does.
Every now and then you come up with a really great post Jonnyo. That one is close to the top of the list.
.
Bought it from Amazon last night.
I’m a big Mark Alan fan.

This is sooo true. In the LR Triple Threat and I were both commenting on what it was that kept us from acheiving “success,” and in both cases it really came down to the mental. In his case it was not being able to inspire himself to do the work. In my case it was an almost bipolar mentality toward my training. Would either train too hard and injure myself, or I would quit training altogether. Even right now I am having a huge mental battle with myself knowing that I need to recover from my last race, even though mentaly I want to double my mileage.
Yes, talent is very important, but it IS the mental game that makes the best the best.
-Michael Jordan
-Lance Armstrong
-Larry Bird
-Wayne Gretsky
-Mohamed Ali
All were mental giants over their competitors.
barry,… most athlete are like you… train to hard or not enough. That is why you would get a lot out of getting coach by someone even if you are yourself a coach. Always good to have someone looking at what you do with a objective eye… To have someone take the decision for you and guide you help a lot to shut down your brain on if you should or not do something…just focusing on execution and doing it day in day out!
to your list, i would add tiger woods… that guy is so amazing on the mental level…

I see a few problems hiding in the bushes down the road. Do you see them?
