Anyone race/train for a great cause?

Hi everyone, Does anyone race/train for a great cause? Just curious about this topic. Thanks

A very very minor contribution. I use the friends of “Team Type 1” on Zwift to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes. They do group rides a lot. I am not affected but the cause is closer to home with my work so it’s something.

Personal fulfillment seems like a worthy cause to me.

I race in support of CAF Operation Rebound - Operation Rebound (MILITARY PROGRAM) | Challenged Athletes Foundation - and also fundraise annually. This is a division of Challenged Athletes Foundation focused to military active duty, veterans of all eras, and first responders.

Here is a great ST article featuring Ryan Heisler’s interview with Bob Babbit from a couple years ago worth a read - Bob Babbitt, CAF, and Oceanside 70.3 - Slowtwitch News

Perhaps a little tangential, but one of my favorite local races is the Tri for a Cure. It’s one of the major fundraisers for the Maine Cancer Foundation, and all the money raised stays right here in state.

It’s a women’s-only tri, super beginner-friendly, with swim angels, a designated last place finisher, and a whole lot of positive “you got this!” energy. There are a few very fast ladies who race it, but a huge number of the participants are doing it because they have deeply personal connections to cancer, so this is the only tri they’ll ever do.

It’s an incredibly inspiring event. I’ve raced it a number of times and volunteered a couple, and I’m planning on volunteering in 2025 if I’m still in Maine.

Exactly. It’s great when people raise money for charity, but racing for a cause just feels disingenuous.

It’s not a race (although some people think it is) but D’Wife and I do a 75-mile bike tour for MS every year

For a few years, I would do part of an “Urban Ultra” for Back On My Feet. Before its unfortunate demise, it even got picked up on LetsRun’s radar
