Anyone postponed/cancelled a major purchase because of all the nonsense?

Wife and I were close to purchasing a new 4Runner or Land Cruiser but have decided to hunker down and stick with what we’ve got for the foreseeable future. Several friends have made the same decision about similar purchases.

I actually bought a Mach-E for the opposite reason. Cars are only going to get more expensive.

I’ve wanted to do a walking tour of Scotland…but Americans are likely not very welcome in Europe at present.

I didn’t cancel something specifically, but I have definitely put a hold on any plans I had to do some remodelling this year. It’s probably past time for me to get new appliances, and I’d like to do some work in the kitchen and bathrooms, but as a federal employee, I’m going with “better safe than sorry” before spending large sums of money.

I’m sure I’d be ok with my military pension, but if I didn’t have a job for an extended period, I’d not want to have also just dropped a lot on home renovation.

Yes. We had that debate also. One of the deciding factors was our dealership couldn’t guarantee the price because of uncertainty.

We are going to buy my wife’s Acura when it’s off lease next year. That price is already set so we plan to pay cash for it and drive that vehicle into the ground.

We are going to Italy and France for 3 weeks in July, catching the last week of the tour. We shall see.

Fair. I bought used so didn’t have the price uncertainty.

Yes. We put a down payment a year ago for a house remodeling project. Contractor started this week and 2 weeks ago we cut >60% of the total and will be much more careful about scope creep than we would have been 6 months ago.

Contractor understood as my wife is likely to lose her contract work via the dept of Ed, but we will have a number of windows we purchased that will go into indefinite storage.

Bright side for you is that you might have dodged a bullet with first year 4Runner/landcruiser gremlins. Love our 4Runner but would not buy one in the first model year.

I am ready to buy, in cash, a new truck but have held off because of the uncertainty in the fed govt employment space. I am a contractor, working on the system that brings the second most money into the US Treasury (IRS brings the most obviously).

I am optimistic my project and role is safe but you never know right now.

I work from home, we contractors can’t be forced back to the office because our contract doesn’t have work space included anymore, it was specifically written for 100% remote. So my need of a new truck is personal more than an actual need. So I’d rather keep that money in savings, just in case.

Maybe next year.

Yep, looking at 4Runner here. Don’t need it…yet, so we are sitting on the sidelines.

I’m in the UK right now.
Everyone we’ve met that have asked about “things over there at the moment” seem to get that only half the country are Orange Fuckwit fans and what’s happening is an aberration, not normal.

We’re putting a new roof on the house and buying a Tesla in a few weeks.

so if I go to Scotland, I’ll buy a bunch of tshirts that say “F!@# Trump” to wear.

I believe the statistic is that only 4 MAGA have ever owned a passport, and 3 of those lost it down the back of the couch (perhaps while Vancing it).

So, at least hereabouts, being a US citizen is more likely to be met with sympathy. The default assumption, unless you are drooling on your shoes, would be that you are an anti -Trump escapee and deserving of support.

I almost did the opposite. We weren’t planning on getting a new car until next year, but almost got one back in January to avoid tariffs and possibly take advantage of EV tax credit. Decided not to. Now I am just hoping that I am not going to regret the decision. Probably made the right call as my normally secure job is at small risk of being DOGEd. One of the government guys we work with was RIFed and called back within a day when someone figured out his program is critical to Starlink operations.

Make sure to tell all the locals how “quaint” everything is. They never get told that, and will be really delighted.

I work in industry (trains) but our company transports tourists from Vancouver to Banff/jasper.

I am actually a bit worried as to what the U.S. Government can or will do to disincentivize travel abroad by its citizens. I really don’t know but wouldn’t be surprised by some sort of export travel “tariff” imposed upon foreign travel to select countries.

Our 200k remodel/addition is on hold mainly because my wife is a battery researcher in a private company but a lot of projects are government research projects and the government money has completely stopped so the company is in big trouble.

Just got back from a BLeisure trip to London.

Felt the Doge cuts etc., didn’t register much in the news there. But Brits were upset at Vance dissing their recent military experience, and the position about Ukraine. All understandable.

As far as us postponing things… nothing big was planned, but basically taking a wait-see approach to how thing develop.

The guy that used to wash the oil industry’s nutsack in his posts is buying a BEV.

What is the world coming to?
