Anyone notice increased chain suck on new/latest shimano drive train?

.
chain sucking up around bottom bracket or chain dropping inside lower sprocket onto bb area more often than past shimano group sets ?
and chain not coming free as easy as before by just finessing the crank set backwards a little .
as if chain rings are re-designed on the backside in a way that binds up the chain more than previous chain ring designs

There is a front and back to an 11 speed dura ace chain if that is what you are using.

i never replaced the chain
only the crank set.

Do you have the chain on the right way?

yes.

Did you adjust the front derailleur?
9100 moved the chainline outward 0.5mm.

Chain suck is nothing to do with dropping chains.
Chain suck is when the chain fails to disengage the front chainring and then proceeds to wrap up the chainring until it either jumps free, tears off your rear derailleur or jams with the incoming chain and/or the front derailleur.
If you are using all Shimano bits, then the only way this happens is worn out parts, bent chain links or tight links or possibly bent teeth on the chainring.

If you have a full Shimano setup and you are dropping chains, then it is out of adjustment, worn to crap or you frame designer ignored minimum chain stay lengths.

Properly setup and maintained Shimano systems simply do not suffer from these ailments.

I have a Gen 1 9 series SC that had a Rival Crank. It would suck the chain on any sketchy shift. Maybe 1 time per ride. I swapped to Ultegra. It still happens, but much less often. I’m quite confident in setup and the fact that I always run clean equipment.

My road bike is a Madone with DA9000. I bet I’m pushing 25,000 miles on that bike. It’s never once sucked the chain.

It’s very interesting to hear that swapping cranks only can cause an issue like above. Especially when sucked chains are so hard on the BB area finish :frowning:

i took off 170 mm cranks
and put on 165 mm cranks.
each crank set has the same 53/39t size sprocket set up .

How much wear has your chain got?
Have you inspected the teeth on the chainring for gouging that may capture a chain?
I ask this because if it has had a non Shimano chain on it before it may have been worn strange.

When you fitted the new crankset, did you twist the poor old chain up and generally abuse it to clear the rings?
Have you tried going back to your previous crankset to see if the problem disappears?

I’m betting your chain is worn out and that trying to run it on a new crankset is the problem.
The old crankset was worn into the old chain, hence no problem.

the entire groupset has less than 1000 miles on it.
came on the new bike , but was not latest ultegra model fc-6700
but the new crankset is the newest latest design

when it hung up i didnt force anything.
i did the standard few attempts and it was not dislodging.
so i just stopped and fished out the chain and put it back on the rings

Are you saying that you had an FC-6700 crankset and changed it to an FC-6800 crankset?

i went
from ultegra fc-6700 170mm 53/39t
to
105 fc-5800 165mm 53/39t.

FC-6700 is 10 speed.

FC-5800 is 11 speed.

yes.
i was told by everyone here that 10 & 11 spd cranks are interchangeable

That is what I have heard too, but I would still never mix.

Does it happen in all of the rear gears? Or just the little ring and 11or 12? Sounds like you still have a 10 speed chain on the bike. If you are getting suck in only those gears it might be the chain engaging the big ring shift pins due to the crossover chain angle. If thisbike has short chainstays it’ll make the problem worse. Switching to a narrower 11 sp chain may help.

it only happens when i downshift front shifter
chain falls down inside the smaller ring and begins to wrap around bottom bracket area
that’s when i feel it binding up
i have to stop pedaling and try back pedal to get it loose
and try and get chain back onto front ring, begin coasting until stop
…once chain gets hung up on the rear brake because frame has the brake down by BB .
it wont just come free , unless done by hand

i have no issues with rear sprockets or the rear derailleur

Sorry, I meant does the chain suck happen up front when you are in one of the two smallest cogs in back? I know your not seeing the suck in back but the position of the chain in back could be an indicator of what’s causing the suck.
