Anyone know where to swim in Jackson Hole?

Just curious as to the swimming situation out there. Public pool? Must be a lake or two. Thanks

Not in Jackson or Jenny Lake, unless you have wetsuit, booties, neoprene cap, gloves, and a defibrillator.

swimmersguide says there’s a rec centre in town with a 25yd pool, but the link to the rec centre web page is broken.

OK, found the schedule,

can’t swim in the lakes comfortably, figure high 40s-low 50s currently for water temps. Runoff is still in full swing, that’s snowmelt, so it will be brisk for some time.

I’ll be camping in Gros Ventre next week, planned to do some running and bag the swimming…

I grew up in Jackson. Rec center in town has a 25yd pool and is probably your best bet. Swam as a kid all the time in String Lake. String Lake is a small lake by Jenny Lake in the park. There is a nice 10’ rock you can jump off. Water in no more than 10’ deep. Bring a wetsuit…

I was in Jackson Hole about a year ago.
The Rec Center in the middle of town has a decent pool and easy to get to.
Its a 25 yd pool but when I was there, late fall, it was very busy. I had to wait around a bit to get in the water and had to share a lane.

Plus, if you are with kids, there is a kids play pool.

JAC recreation center is your best bet. I swam there. Clean, newer, planty of lanes, water temp correct for swim w/o, check lap swim times on their website. I travel for living and have been swimming everywhere in the country. This is one of the better pools. If you are a sea level athlete, keep in mind 6500ft elevation at JAC. It is a serious factor. If you dissregard it, you will be breathless before you know it and SI are not being met and you are melting down, but don’t know why. Speaking from personal experience. I live on 1000ft elev.

I live in JH. The rec center is the only real pool. Lakes are still very cold 60-62. We have a group that swims 6:30-8 a.m. M, W, and F. Fun group, all welcome, different abilities. Rec center number is 307-739-9025. Send me a PM if you have any other questions. Great biking and running too.

just returned, I can report that String lake is a nice temp for swimming, probably high 60s low 70s. I tested the lakes by throwing the kids in:

  • Slide Lake on the Gros Ventre, turned blue in 5 min, chilly
  • Leigh Lake above String lake, cold but bearable for 10min or so
  • Jackson Lake, as for Slide

We swam for half-an-hour in String lake.

If you go to Yellowstone, the Madison Junction campground is next to the confluence of the Firehole and Gibbon rivers. The Firehole is warm from all the hot springs, and there’s a strong current in the confluence pool, so you can simulate an Endless-Pool workout. There’s a cinnamon bear that visits occasionally, and two elk hanging around the meadows, plus some big damn trout hanging at the bottom.

Hi. I’ll be in the area the first week in August and was hoping to find some locals to train with- swim and ride mainly. I’ll be visiting my parents who live in Driggs, ID. Thanks for any info and direction you might could give me. I’ll be about a month out from a half iron at that time. Thanks! Meredith Hadley. 405-823-1104

Stop by Fitzgerald’s bicycles right on the main highway in downtown Victor (about ten minutes South of Driggs heading towards Teton Pass). They run a shop ride and sponsor a number of local riders and triathletes. If fast group rides are your thing then the Tuesday night ride leaving from Jackson’s high school is a good way to get a fast hour or two of riding, ride typically leaves at 6 pm. Peaked Sports right in downtown Driggs is another good resource and can steer you towards riding partners or great local rides.

There’s tons of good riding on both sides of the pass, pretty hard to go wrong. Definitely take a ride up to Grand Targhee ski resort from Driggs, not a long day but a good ride and a local time trial each summer that might line up with your trip.

Have a great trip,
-Dave

Thanks for the info! I love the idea of a fast ride, but I think the altitude will have me sucking air;). Swimming still open at the rec center?
