Doesn’t even look like his brake lights are on.

What I want to know is how someone got that candid photo -

How can you possibly be ready to click in a situation like that :frowning:

Sadly, the guy was hopped up on drugs…

and 5 people died…

.

I think I’m ill.
My thoughts are with the racers and their families.

Wow…
When you look at such tragedy and its likelihood to happen (driver believing he is in a real life bowling alley and he is the bowl and the guys are the pins), this is when you realize no matter what when your time is due, your time is due.

This is definitively scary! While the riders who will survive this accident, will have “scars” for the rest of their lifes I hope the riders who dies did not suffer at all and at least they did doing something they enjoy :frowning:

Fred.

it was a good death
and I’m crying anyway
.

I read 1 dead and 9 injured. Driver (an American) was drunk and asleep at the wheel (thus no brake lights).

Tragic. And that photo alone just makes me angry…

From the local TV channel:

MATAMOROS, Mexico - A fatal crash happened in Matamoros during a family bicycle tour. Friends of the victims tell NEWSCHANNEL 5 at least 5 people died.

So far, one of the victims was identified. He’s 30-year old Alejandro Alvarez of Brownsville. At least 12 people are hurt. Ten of them are in critical condition right now. Several victims were taken to a Brownsville hospital.

Mexican media reports Jesse Campos of Brownsville was under the influence of drugs, when he tried to drive pass a police car escorting the cyclists, and crashed into a crowd of riders.

Brownsville man killed in Matamoros cycling accident
June 2, 2008 - 12:18PM
By Jose Borjon, The Brownsville Herald

A Brownsville man is dead and at least four people remained hospitalized Monday in Rio Grande Valley hospitals after being struck by a car while riding in the third annual Bike Tour Matamoros-Playa Bagdad Sunday morning.

Alejandro Alvarez, 34, of Brownsville, died at the scene of the accident. Alvarez suffered injuries to his skull and throughout his body, the Mexican news outlet Agencia Reforma reported in a Sunday story. Fourteen others were injured at the scene. Their conditions were unknown.

The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, just 15 minutes and seven miles into the race, after the cyclists began their ride to Playa Bagdad, Reforma reported.

Edgar Omar Castro, 14, also of Brownsville, was listed in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, VBMC spokeswoman Teri Retana said.

She confirmed that two other people who were in the race were being treated at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville, but said she could not provide the names to the newspaper.

A fourth person who also was injured in Sunday’s accident was transferred to Valley Regional Medical Center, Retana said.

The bike race participants were allegedly struck by Jesse Lopez, 29, who drove a 1989 Gran Marquis. Lopez was driving drunk and under the influence of drugs, Matamoros newspapers reported in their Monday editions.

A total of 452 cyclists participated in the race, which was 21 miles, but had to be cancelled due to the accident.

Always tie your shoes and buckle your helmet. THey might come off in a crash :frowning:

That is just awful that this could happen. A police escort and still a horrible crash.

The police car should have sped ahead and use his car to save the lives of the cyclists by colliding with the other car!
easier said than done … but this pisses me off! I hope he gets live in prison!

motherf++ker. hope bubba puts it to him in his jail cell.

I’m in favor of blowing up this photo to poster size, then having it hung outside of this guy’s cell where he can see it, but not pull it down. He should have to look at this for every hour of every day of his jail sentence.

Does anyone know for how long can we expect this person to spend in jail for something like this and under the conditions (drunk and high on drugs) that he was under?

Hopefully Mexico has severe penalties!!!

In Mexico? Quite a long time, they have a more severe system and I’ve heard that mexican jails are not the country clubs that ours are. I’m sure the lawyers will try extradition, if he’s an American, and not just a green carder.

AND in addition to that…

Posters of the people killed kids, wives, husbands, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, friends – all at the funeral moarning the lost of thier loved one.

This idiot driver did not just kill a few cyclists - He killed someone’s dad, someone’s mom, someone’s brother or sister, someone’s husband or wife, someone’s son or daughter, someone’s best friend.

The driver ruined many lives, not just the people he killed.
