Anyone know about using the flywheel or fan with kreitler rollers?

I am a 6 to 6:15 IM biker. After trying rollers, I love them. I am buying a set of kreiters but know nothing about these two additions. Does the fan just make it harder or progressively harder? Am I to weak for the flywheel? Any replies would be nice…Thanks Kenney

I ride the dyno-lyte, 3" diameter - I think (now called alloy 3.0). I find the usable speed to be ~15mph-28mph, can go slower, but less stable, can go faster, but then my cadence is so high that I move around too much. Usually do hard rides @ ~25mph or ~230W and longer rides @ ~20mph or ~175W.

With the 3.0 set-up you could push close to 300W with a 53-12 ring at 100RPM. See the wattage chart on the website http://www.kreitler.com/wattage_chart.pdf.

I find that the 3.0 rollers are pretty close to a “road speed”. I.e. I can hold the same speed on the rollers as on a flat road with no wind. If you can ride flat routes at 18-20mph (and based on your IM times you can), I would **not **get the standard one (4.5"), as you will need the add-ons. I would recommend the 3.0 (fan unit will add noise).

Per the website the flywheel is progressive (just adds friction, so the faster you go the bigger the effect), and there are 4 settings on the fan unit. Again, check out the wattage chart for the actual effects.

makes it very much harder.

don’t know if you’re too weak. ride your rollers for an hour and then see how you feel.

remember, they are for perfecting form/stroke and making you a better cyclist. not for mimicking an ironman course for a 6 hour indoor training ride.

get the rollers, then see how you do.

well when I borrowed my friends rollers and hooked up the fan on the little fan pulley it got way harder!!!

I mean the watts went way up. you can also play with the little window on the fan to change the resistance.

so if you want resistance you get the fan.

Thanks, that is what I need to hear. I had borrowed the 4.5 and loved the aspect of rollers but there was not quite the amount of resistaince needed, which generated my question. So you narrowed my options…Thanks

Sorry Kitty, I am confused. I have ridden 4.5 rollers and love them. I do need to make it harder though. When you say it makes it much harder, are you saying te size, fan or flywheel? I do have a trainer. I can ride the 4.5 with no problem, but it is a question of getting the 3.0 or 4.5 with flyheelmor fan…Thanks love your posts Kenney

I use the fan as it adds resistance AND keeps a cooling breeze in my face.

Smaller drums will make it harder. So will adding a resistance unit such as a fan or flywheel. The nice thing about the fan is that it blows air at you (hence the name “Killer headwind”). The downside is that it isn’t exactly quiet…
