I recently bought a house, and about 60% of the roof has no attic space. This means there’s no room for standard insulation. Living in San Diego, this generally isn’t a problem. Except on the hottest days, when the roof gets really hot and you can just feel it radiating down into the house.
I’ve researched options, and the only things I can find are an insulating roof system where they put a layer of ceramic or foam tiles underneath the shingles, or various coatings that have thermal reflective/emissive properties that you can just paint on.
I’m hesitant to do the tile option because the roof is relatively new and in fine shape.
Has anyone done the coating option, or know anything about it? Are there any other options I missed?
Surely there’s 6-8" of space between the ceiling and the roof deck, right? I mean, your ceiling joist would be at least that tall, I would think. That may not be enough space to do any blown insulation, but perhaps enough to do some venting that would get air moving and let the heat escape?
What color is your roof? A light colored shingle is going to reflect a lot more light and keep your home cooler.

how is the roof ventilation? Do you have venting on the roof? Large enough eaves vents? Do you need a power vent?

Right, there’s about 6". The roof is vented. There’s an eave, and vents under the eaves.
The roof is black with asphalt shingles. Probably about the worst combination of color and materials. Which is why I was thinking of putting a thermally reflective coating over the shingles. Some products say you can paint it right over asphalt shingles.
I don’t know if I would do a power vent. The heat is radiant heat. The power vent won’t do much to deal with that. Plus, it generally sucks air not just through the eaves but from your house too.
You might do best with a spray foam like Icynene. Expensive and difficult, but it will do both the insulation and air sealing.
Change the color of the roofing. Plant a tree that will shade the house.
