This will be my first disc wheel. Currenty, I use a Vel+ 6580RL set (65mm front, 80mm rear), and I know that even the best disc wheel will not make a big difference. Oh, and I am not that fast, too, about 210, 220W on a 90 km course.
Maybe I am lucky, maybe I should have invested the money in an additional day in a training camp - we’ll see. The wheel is on it’s way, with tracking number, so if anyone is interested, I can take pics and write something about it when it arrives.
Yeah absolutely interested. You’re a braver person than I am!
I will say that a disc wheel is a pretty sizable upgrade over even a good deep dish rear wheel. If it’s light winds maybe not so much, but as cross winds (and yaw) increases, it can make a huge difference.
I am probably just a cheaper person It will be interesting to check if that wheel works with a larger read derailleur cage. The seller confirmed it, but I don’t know what’s that worth.
I bought a cheapish disc ($800) from WheelsFar 4 years ago. Was on the higher end of “Cheap” but built with DT Swiss Hubs. Have used it for 10 IM races + a host of other events. Lots of fast bike splits, no problems.
Cages of some rear derailleurs with OSPWs, like Ceramicspeed or Kogel, rub on some disc wheels. That’s why many current disc wheels have a concave-convex shape on the drive side.
Currently a fake Kogel Aero. I am totally aware that the bearings are way worse than the original, and that the cage is probably just as good as the SRAM one (disputable aero gains, see Lovseth, plus installation of any cage is a pita with SRAM). And there is of course the question of intellectual property and supporting plagiarism.
I have it for fun. My time for a standard 70.3 is about 5:15, spack in the middle. I just compete against myself and entropy, and I could never spend hundreds of euros for this bling.
I just checked the price for the EZ Disc covers. It’s 240.90€ including shipping. I paid 254€ for the wheel, also including shipping. There are additional costs for the wheel if you would remove the cover after a race and use the non-disc wheel for rides and training, like TPU tube, tire, and maybe a cassette and a disc rotor if you don’t swap them for your race (all in all about 150€ if you use a non-SRAM cassette from Aliexpress - never had a problem with them).
