Anyone here ever been called a "tug?"

A conversation came up with my coworker who lives in Europe. We were talking about Connor McGreggor and she said, “That guy is a real tug.”

I’d never heard of a tug before. “Is that like a jerk off? Or a wanker?”

“No. He’s a tug. Like he owns a bar and has his own line of whiskey. A guy came in and he offered him a drink, but the guy didn’t want any, so he got pissed off and punched him.”

“That sounds like a jerk off to me.”

“No. A tug. Like over zealous soccer futbol fans who care too much about their teams.”

“Yeah, I’d call them jerkoffs, too.”

“No, they’re tugs. If their team loses, they get into brawls. They just start beating people up, like a bunch of tugs.”

It was in this moment that I remembered she lives in Ireland. “Oh, wait…are you saying THUG with an Irish accents?”

“Yes! TUGS!”

FWIW, I’m not making fun of the accent. I just literally thought it was some cool insult I’d never heard of before!

Ah so a munter? Or possibly a muppet?

No, not if you’ve met a Millwall or West Ham supporter. Thugs and Muppets are not the same

A munter is an ugly person. A muppet is an air headed vacuous person.

I’ve head “tug” [sic] used in only context: to describe one of two men looking to pick up girls. The tug is the male who puts in the work on the less attractive of a pair of girls, pulling her away from her more attractive friend and so leaving an easier tactical path for the other male.
