Here you go; As I remember the swim in this race was unbelievable. There was a hurricane offshore somewhere, and that’s why the swim times were so slow. A point to to point against the grain…Also check out the story about the super relay that Jim Curl put together, Paul Asmuth, John Howard, and Rod Dixon…
…Madruga…was he not that Brazilian dude that could swim like nuts? Was 85 the year when Molina was winning every USTS race?
Monty, got pics or stories of the race where Pigg was running for his life with Allen chasing him down? It was Hilton Head, I forgot what year.
I used to watch the tape of that race over and over because I liked Pigg’s grit.
I remember Molina at the awards saying about the swim something like…
that was the first time I ever swam uphill!
There were massive swells I remember. When I would sight at the top of one I could see like the whole course. when try to sight at the bottom of one all I saw was a wall of water.
That was a fun race!
I’ve got them. What do you need to know?
I could hear people laughing and talking during the swim but I couldn’t see anything. I think everyone quit trying after about fifteen minutes “swim to the top, slide down the back”.

Ya, Djan was one of the fastest 3 guys in swimming ever to do this sport for more than a couple races. He was an Olympic finalist for Brasil one year, and the only guys I knew to come out with him were a lifeguard buddy of mine named Paul Donahue, and a couple years later Rob Mackel. These guys also had an unwritten rule to not draft each other in the swim, it was a mano a mano kind of thing. Stupid really, but I guess they just wanted to see who was the best swimmer, not triathlete…
Uphill swim in 1986, downhill (in spades) in 1987. Another off-shore storm, but they walked us up the beach for 1500 meters and had us swim back south with the rip tide. You could float it in under 20 minutes.
Many of you who were at Hilton Head in 1985 may remember signing a race poster at the awards ceremony. I have that poster. It’s great to look at the names. Marlynn Madruga, Bob Bell, Hans Dieben, Brooks Clark, Linda Buchanan…
OH WAIT!!! There were other Hilton Head USTS Championships!??? Does anyone have results from any of those?
Here’s me on the run (as if that is any good to you…):
And here is tinley in the TA before the race:
That’s all I have readily available.
You could float it in under 20 minutes.
Yes, 1987 was fast, but I didn’t think it was that fast. Rick Wells led the swim but I thought his time was still up around 18 minutes (maybe just under).
HEY MONTY~
HEY TOM~
HEY LEW~
HEY ANYONE ELSE…
Does anyone have any results, pics, or info. on other Hilton Head National Championships from other 1985 or 1987 years?
Thanks!
Monty, that was '85. The finish was Molina, Madruga, Allen, Tinley, Robinson, Hinshaw and MARK A. MONTGOMERY. Demerly finished 312th in '85. I had qualified for that one but I didn’t go because of the hurricane.
'86 I did go to and the top pros were Molina, Scott, Tinley, Wells, Alitz and Robinson. Pigg was 10th and Riccitello was 11th. A couple of note were Cuddeback in 28th, Wes Hobson in 77th,Lance Armstrong in 99th, and. Frank Rehnelt(RENN) 100th.
I have both the 1985 and 1986 finisher’s booklets and if anyone would like me to look up someone or know times, I would be happy to do so.

I’ve got the ESPN coverage on VHS and the results book from 1989. That’s the year the top 5 (more?) got DQ’d for various bike infractions. Probably still have the t-shirt somewhere. Any specific info you need?
Fun race although sort of a disaster for me. First time I ever raced in the ocean. That year was also a point to point 1.5k. I’m pretty sure I was last out of the water in 20-24. Don’t remember any other bikes on my racks when I came in. Caught a pedal on a corner and rolled a tire on the bike. Had a decent run and caught a few people.

That’s really cool that you still have those complete results. I wish I would have kept mine from all those years. Look at all those people now that can say that they kicked Lance’s butt. I remember that swim very well too. I got led off course for awhile by one of the kayackers, who was barely able to stay upright, by the time I got back on the course, I had lost a minute and a half. Looking at my splits now, it was a shame that I screwed the pooch on my best event, because I had one of the better bike/runs for me at that time. Might have been dukeing it out with Allen for 3rd or 4th…Oh well, that’s why it’s called TRIathlon…
There were a couple of pictures. Molina and Scott had bullhorns and discs but Pigg was on road bars. I think Pigg debuted the first aerobars the next April in Crawfiahman in Mandeville, LA.
In '85 Molina had 58:17 bike and you had a 58:59. You finished 17 on the points list in’85 and 18 in '86.
In '86, I had a 1:13 bike split. In 2005, I had a 1:08. Go figure.

There were many “aero” bars around at the time. They were made from PVC pipe, broom handles, and duct tape(Kentucky chrome). Then, I think it was Boone Lennon who started producing the tri-bar.
BTW, if you have one of the Bud Lite Hilton Head hats(white in 1985, blue thereafter) hang on to it. I was offered $100 for a blue one.
Is/was Tinley a redass (redneck) or is it just the hat, hair & moustache of the times?
He looks like he should be driving a stock car.
