Before I begin this is self diagnosed: A little over a week ago I did a 10 mile run in a pair of shoes I had just put speed laces on (not new shoes). Long story short I had no pain during the run but shortly after the top of my foot started aching. There is no bruising or swelling. Just a constant annoying pain. I’ve dealt with achillies tendonitis and this is NOTHING like that so I don’t think it’s as bad as a stress fracture. I think I may have overtightened my speed laces and have since loosened them on the bottom of my foot and continued to run (long run since, 14 miles). The pain is the worst in the first mile or so then almost goes away when running. Pain isn’t getting any worse but also not getting any better after a week and a half. Any ideas?
Go visit your podiatrist.
That said, I got a cortisone shot for this same condition yesterday. Xrays ruled out a stress fracture. I had your same symptoms, plus a few extra: 1) pain at night due to blankets pulling on my toe, 2) feeling of grinding on the tendon while flexing the toe. My podiatrist gave two options. Either wear a boot for 4 to 6 weeks, or get a cortisone shot to minimize recovery time. My issue started when I went running on Vibrams that were too tight on the top front of my foot. Like you, I didn’t have any swelling or bruising, and icing didn’t seem to help.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on making a trip to the podiatrist when I got a chance. Really it’s not terrible just annoying. Thankfully I don’t have any troubles sleeping and can’t feel the grinding. I know the grinding feeling though from my achilles. Glad to know that a cortisone shot could take care of it.
Glad to help. The cortisone only relieves swelling, and does not treat the underlying condition. Make sure to get that sorted out by a qualified physician.
I really don’t have any swelling so maybe the cortisone won’t help. Did the podiatrist tell you to stay off it? With the holiday this week I won’t be able to get to the doctor until next week.
Had this last year, about this time. I didn’t let it fully heal and did an “easy” Olympic run at HITS. Really bad crunching (crepitus) after that. Took about three weeks to fully heal
