I’ll be visiting each of these cities for a few days this month and plan on doing quite a bit of training.
What are your favorite running and cycling routes?
Are there any good tri shops in town?
Thanks in advance

I’m down in windsor.
To run: the riverfront is pretty much it for scenery… theres also Malden Park on the west end if you like trails/small hills and its also close to Ojibway Park. East end has the ganachio trail, its not very long though, maybe 5 miles in length and another 4miles inward making a T-shape.
To Ride: get out of the city. You can access county road from pretty much anywhere within 20 minutes of riding… once you get out on the concessions your home free for traffic.
As for shops:
no tri shops in town really…
bike shops:
The Bicycle shop - manning rd and techumseh
Ambassador bikes - ambassador road in very close proximity to malden park
maximum edge bikes - county road 42 very close to the airport
run shops:
the running factory - 5480 wyandotte st. E
the tortoise and the hare - dougall and cabana in a plaza
Work in Oshawa. Tons of good roads north of the city.
Head out of town on Thorton Rd. There are a number of lightly travelled roads in the Oakridges moraine area. I am in the midst of Ironman build for IMFLA so if you are interested in a longer ride (on the weekend) let me know.
Best shop in town is Impala bikes on highway 2 just east of Thickson road.
I just got back from there - the trail system around Lake Ontario is very cool. I ended up staying on the path/sidewalk between Port Credit and Toronto. Parking was kind of a bitch. There were a lot of bikes on the path too (some were hauling ass!), I didn’t have a bike so I don’t know where those guys ride.
onawhim, IMtri’n, and c50jim** **gave me some ideas on other things to get into;

Beautiful city.
Many great routes in Hamilton…tough trail runs and options for hilly rides or some flat TT style courses.
Trail running in Ancaster off Jerseyville road behing the Lions club pool, you can catch part of the Bruce Trail system off there.
Cycling there is a good route up the Niagara Escarpment into the country side, Safari rd has some good hills, try Weirs Lane for a challenge 9-12% grade

Lots of great country roads north of Burlington, out through the tiny villages of Killbride and Moffat. Cedar Springs Road north of Hwy 5 would be a great starting point. Head north.
These “Cycling in Halton” maps are all you need. The roads highlighted as yellow are low traffic and popular cycling roads.

I’m in Windsor:
We have this trail that I love to run on…

That’s a great resource, thanks for posting, I’ll add some new routes for me!

I’m in Toronto. I usually ride just a bit northeast of me in the Markham/Stouffville area. I park at a lot just east of 404 on Elgin Mills and then I ride north on Bayview Ave or Warden or Kennedy or McCowan. I think there’s some road work going on just south of Aurora Rd on Warden, so I usually ride north on either McCowan or Kennedy until I get to crappy road conditions and then I pop over to Warden for the rest. Lots of great hills, good road conditions and little traffic.
For running, I usually head to some combinations of Taylor Creek/Edwards Gardens/Sunnybrook Park. They’re all connected, so you can run any of them and get in some great running routes right in the middle of the city. I also sometimes run at Ashbridges Bay at the foot of Woodbine.
I can only speculate you are doing some sort of feature on “The Worst Cities in Ontario”
Enjoy your visit!
“I can only speculate you are doing some sort of feature on “The Worst Cities in Ontario”” → Can’t be, he forgot Kitchener-Waterloo!
"I can only speculate you are doing some sort of feature on “The Worst Cities in Ontario”
LOL!!! You just reminded me why I moved to eastern Ontario.
Also north of Toronto… Markham Area.
Great riding north of Hwy 7… I’d take Woodbine all the way up… past Bloomington Road north to Aurora and King City areas. Mostly Rolling Hills, and pretty light traffic.
Lol @ worst cities in Ontario… Hamilton for sure… forgot Guelph though. KW is getting nicer.
I find Woodbine really traffic-heavy. Warden, Kennedy and McCowan are all better, IMO.
In Toronto, good Tri shops:
-Running Free in Markham: No bikes, but they are incredibly at shoe fitting, and have eveything else. Good prices, too.
-Endurosport: The Grand-Daddy. In Leaside and the BEaches, great Cervelo dealer.
-Wheels of Bloor: A great bike shop, great selection of Cervelo’ and other.

Aurora - where the riding starts to get really nice. We are a bit disappointed. We now have to deal with a traffic light when heading out of town!! After that - you can ride all the way up to Lake Simcoe and back( about 100K) without putting a foot down or any number of rides on scenic rolling country roads with little traffic.
You can do a really nice ride starting out at Freewheel, a bike store in Dundas. This is basically in Hamilton. You cycle about a block from the store, turn right and you are going up a big hill climbing the escarpment then you are in a rural flat area atop the escarpment and can go miles and miles of nice country roads with good pavement and almost no traffic. There are also group rides going from this store 2x per week.
Freewheel is well stocked but seems expensive
