Anyone from Pittsburgh?

I’ve been offered a job downtown. Where are some good places to live re: biking/running?

Despite the G20 going on right now…it is a great place to live and even better for tris. PM me for more info. Here is a brief synopsis:

Swimming- multiple outdoor pools available. I have a 50meter pool nearby and a 100meter pool in driving distance. Both have designated lap swim hours. Both are also conveniently located next to biking routes (if you do swim/bike bricks this might matter). For indoor swimming there is a Y or if you have been scared off of that option, for a small fee you can join the JCC (Jewish community center) which has a 25yard indoor pool that is open for swimming from morning till night (5AM-10PM, for the most part). They also have a masters class. There are also a couple Universities though it would likely be hard to get access to their pools.

Biking- from my door I can do 100+ mile rides with a good 80 some of those on beautiful, perfect for biking roads. We have crit races at a half mile oval bike track almost every week spring to summer. There are also a number of road races put on close by. You have plenty of hills to prepare you for races. Roads and drivers aren’t the best but pretty darn good.

Running- numerous trails (if trail running is your thing), a couple tracks open to the public, not sure what else you need for running. There is a local Fleet Feet store that can help you get the right pair of running shoes.

Also, some people are just starting up a tri club here, so you could do the whole group thing if you like. The cost of living is laughably cheap; just don’t live downtown and you are set (no one lives in downtown Pittsburgh).

I went to Pitt, lived in Oakland for 5 years.
Wasn’t much into running/biking back then.

However…
Best Cheese Steak sandwiches…Uncle Sam’s on (I think it was on Atwood St).
Best food at 2:30 am: A large order of fries with cheese and gravy for dipping from the Original (will feed 3-5 people easily).

Just realized I didn’t answer your post. Where to live depends a lot on who you are and what you are looking for- family? acceptable commute? etc… Just PM me.

First of all you’ve been offered a job dahntahn. Not downtown. Went to Pitt but couldn’t tell you where to bike/run. Knee jerk reaction would be anywhere close to dahntahn would be suicidal.

Go Stillers n’at.

From what I’ve seen so far, I’ll have to start smoking and buy Steelers formal wear. Oh… and learn to run/ride hills, I think.

!(images/toolbar/right.gif)I went to Pitt in the mid 90’s. If I went back to live, I’d try to get a place in ShadySide (Sahside) or Squirrel Hill. Lots to do, and nice neighborhoods and parks to run in. Schenley Park and has some great running areas and a good loop for biking. Frick Park (between Squirrel Hill and Regent Square) has some nice single-track mountain biking areas. With some new bike trails recently put in, it’s easy to get downtown (dahntahn) by bike or bus. I haven’t lived outside of the city, so can’t recommend places to live in the 'burbs

Pittsburgh is a great city to live in. If you go there, practice up on your pittsburgh-speak before you get there.

Ummm…it’s spelled:

Stillers

Just sayin’
.

Yins is full of shit! First of all, it’s a cheese steak, not a cheese steak sandwich. 2nd of all, your cheese steaks suck! Out of curiosity, to you screw them up by throwing fries on them?

I laughed and read this to my wife who is from Pittsburgh (we live in Philly) and she commented, “best cheese steaks in Pittsburgh, maybe.”

I’m just teasing you. I visit Pittsburgh several times a year. Being from Philly I’ve had the opportunity to fly around the country and taste some pretty bad knockoffs. We are quite snobish about our cheese steaks. FWIW, my father-in-law insists on getting one everytime he’s in town from the italian owned shop up the street. He swears its the best sandwich he’s ever had.

Your’e thinking about Primanti bro’s that screws their sandwiches up with fries. Uncle Sam’s is just plain awesome

yeah…who screws up Primanti’s and Uncle Sam’s? What a jagoff.
I used to live a block away from Uncle Sam’s in grad school. Man did I eat differently back then!

Nope. I know the difference. I also know the difference between a Philly Cheese Steak and a Pittsburgh Cheese Steak Sandwich. = ^ P

Fixed your post. If I lived in Philly, I would take every opportunity to get the hell out of that cesspool as well. You may want to consider moving somewhere people actually want to live. The only good thing about Philly is it isn’t in Ohio.

“The only good thing about Philly is it isn’t in Ohio.”

I am pretty darn sure that applies to Pittsville"h" as well. Lived in Squirrel Hell for a year. A lot of those folks seem to not even recognize that you exist or are present on the same sidewalk if not dressed in black garb. Never had to use sunscreen that year, until I went on vacation back to WI and got sunburned in one 2 hour ride. Could ride 4-5 in Pitt and never need any, the sun couldn’t make it through the now “clean air”. Ex woke up one day and her eyes were blinded, she wondered why I had left every light in the house on. I hadn’t, a front had blown through and actual sunlight was scalding her eyes.

Someone mentioned that park near Pitt/CMU, nice place to walk trail if you don’t mide being exposed to all the folks hooking up in the “fruit loop” as it was kindly known, not that there is anything wrong with that. We ended(bad choice of words) up with a number of friends that turned out, were regulars there.

Yins can keep the city.

There was sone flooding there that year, and I saw more than one auto floating down the river.

Have they fixed any of the bridges or are they all still draped with nets underneath to catch the falling rubble?

PS, in SQ Hell, better not move anyone’s parking chair to park, bad karma will get you, karma being the owner of said chair.

I wonder if that “fella” with all the banners with “his” name draped on all the homes ever showed up

LOL...my room mate freshman year was on the baseball team at Pitt. He wasn't sure where the practices where other than he knew they were somewhere in Schenley Park. He went off the first day looking for the field or where he was supposed to be and ended up in the "wrong" part of the park wearing his baseball uniform. Said he got a ton of whistles and propositions from the "fruit loop". We never let him live that down.

The nets have been removed…that is all I am going to say.
I would not worry too much about the bridges. Every architect/engineer in the world has been saying for years that Pittsburgh is going to collapse. For years we have done nothing to address these problems and yet we are still standing- knock on wood…oh crap! The wall just feel down.

I rode over some bridge heading south out of sq hl that had, and I am not kidding, a 3’ wide hole in it on the shoulder portion. Looked to be a good 150’ drop from there to the river below. That would be a nice pothole to hit if one were not paying attention.

I also love how folks couldn’t seem to keep their speeds up heading into the tunnels on the way to murraysville. I know that is a common phenom., but still annoying as all get out.

There was a nice off leash park for dogs just east of schenley. Ol’ Amber loved that place, fetching tennis balls. She needed anti lock brakes however, as she more than one head roll and became a half green golden.

I’ve lived in Philly, San Diego, DC, and Delaware as an adult. I’ve enjoyed Philly the most. Here’s why:

And most importantly, lots and lots of trails in a very pretty area right down the street from my house.

Sure, we’ve got some of the shittiest ghettos in the country…far worse than most cities. I don’t live in them, however. = ^ )

I heard a few years ago that the O’s was closing. Can anyone confirm/deny?

Deny…still open…new owners though.
