Anyone eat Larabars during long rides?

Anyone eat Larabars during a long ride? Around me they are always on sale for 1.20-1.50 ea, roughly the same price for one energy gel. At ~220 calories a bar that’s pretty good. The only issue with them that I can see is the high fiber and fat content. I normally just use EFS liquid shot and Gu, but figure since it’s the off season a mix up would be nice.

Love Larabars. Can’t beat the naturalness of the ingredients. I never had a problem with the fibre but YMMV. The only issue I found with bars of any sort is that it’s hard to swallow due to having a dry mouth. i.e. drink lots with it.

I do. Delicious!

Nice having something else other than a sugary gel or drink. And those bars are like 3-5 ingredients, all of which are pretty easy on my stomach (mostly ground up dates).

Yes, and they have worked well.

I tend to not be too picky about what I eat, I figure carbs are carbs. This has only backfired on me once when I heavily relied on Hammer Recoverite during a 4 loop 100 mile Mnt. Bike race. I realized by the third lap that I was not feeling as peppy as I thought I should be. Transistioned to goos and other tranditional standbys for the last lap and recovered enough to not feel like crap, but not enough to regain any mojo.

Most of the flavors are still too sweet if I’m looking for a change of pace versus gels and PowerBar type foods. I’ll often just pick up a pack of the cheap peanut butter crackers…usually around 200 calories, mostly carbs, and dirt cheap.

That is way too expensive. You should easily be able to get the bars under $1. I bought 244 for like $90 on ebay a while back.

You know, I have to tell you I’d be really, really afraid to buy something edible on eBay. No logical reason why, I just would.

And you think you are better off buying them at a supermarket?

Probably not. But still, I’m skeeved out by buying on eBay.

Absolutely, a local supermarket buys short dated bulk boxes at $5 for 16…AWESOME deal for orangey goodness.

I buy them at Sam’s and they come out to about a dollar each. They’re great to eat on a ride but I found them unfriendly to my stomach on the run portion of long brick workouts.

all the time. Ginger snap and cocnut cream pie are my two favorite flavors. About a buck a pop on sale at most stores.

Ended up buying some! Got peanut butter chocolate chip and coconut cream pie. I’ll be trying them on my long ride today. There were almost too many different flavors to choose from…all sounding awesome.

I guess I’ll need to look around some. I know the Costco by me sells them.

I think I’m going dyslexic… at first glance I honsetly thought that it said “does anyone eat labradors…”

nothing wrong with fat - its used for fuel too … As for the fiber if it is insoluble then it turn into a mdium chain fatty acid - also used for fuel

I’ve found the chocolate chip cookie dough to be the easiest to chew and swallow during a ride and there’s only 3 grams of fiber. Some of the other flavors are a little drier and have 5 grams of fiber.

I eat them and like them for long rides, especially if I do a bit of running afterwards.

Like many people have said, they can get pricey. I’ve made the Cashew Cooking ones and that helps cut down the price if I’m eating a lot of them. You can fine different recipes on the web and they are pretty easy to make since there are 2-5 ingredients, depending on the flavor.

Must be tired, as I have seen this thread before today, but in skimming topics I could have sworn I read “anyone eat Labradors during long rides…”…

Carry on.

I only did 50 miles, but brought a long two bars cut into small chunks. They were awesome…I wish I would have thought about it earlier.

Definitely would be easy to make with a food processor. I may have to try that.

x2…my stomach cannot tolerate gels, sports drinks, etc…

I train and race on Larabars, bananas/dates, and coconut water (or water/salt tabs if racing)…
