Anyone DIY BTA bottle with straw?

I only do the oly, sprint races so far… was going to get the A2 or Aero HC bottle. But thought maybe I can make my own bottle with straw stuck in it. Thought I was ask all the experts on ST whether anyone has made their own? Given the short distances, I am not concerned about refilling. I also ride the Shiv, where I use the fuelselage for water and use BTA for enhanced fluids. Any thoughts… ideas?

yup. just take a normal bottle. electrical tape it between the bars (pre filled up). carve a small hole in the top and shove a straw in.

Slowman did this a few years ago. Search the main page for Cervelo p3 carbon preferred build. I believe some tubeing glue and two o rings were involved.

I got some plastic (food safe) 3/8" tubing from a hardware store, drilled a 3/8" hole in the side of a cheap water bottle, and shoved the tubing in. Had to add another (much smaller) vent hole to make it easier to drink from, but it works great.

Works fine, but don’t forget a small vent hole.

The only tricky thing is filling it – because the straw hole is at the bottom of the bottle, I put my thumb over the hole when I fill it, then put it into the bottle cage, then put the straw in.

I have another one that has the straw hole higher up on the shoulder of the bottle, but I like the position of the straw on this one better.

“The only tricky thing is filling it”. Good point. Duh, I hadn’t thought of that…

Found one wasn’t needed because the punched hole had small gaps on the outside of the straw that allowed for air exchange.

Looks like tubing but no glue. I guess the o-rings are because he drilled an oversized hole? On my setup, the tubing fits the hole snugly enough there is no need for o-rings.

I like the idea of using a cage like he does rather than the traditional one I’ve got – it would allow me to slide mine into the cage without removing the straw.

thanks. I couldn’t find it earlier. But how would I fill the bottle with the straw in it?

Not sure! The setup on the bike in the article is such that it looks like you could fill it up ~3/4 full without doing anything funny – maybe that’s enough. Of course, the higher (further forward) you put the straw, the more you can fill it without having to think about the process further.

If you have the shiv the best solution is to have your BTA refill the internal bladder. I dont have pictures of my current setup now but i have a VERY early prototype shown in another ST thread - http://forum.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?post=4597036#4597036

After that post i did away with the nylon T-junction and now use a very small valve to refill the shiv bladder from the BTA.

This is the valve you need

Use a nylon 5/16 fitting arrangement as shown in the photo to get the water from the bottom or the end of the bta to the shiv bladder.

The new setup consists of (top to bottom)
BTA
nylon fittings
hose
valve with quick disconnect (female)
quick disconnect (male)
hose through rubber bladder
shiv bladder

Hope this helps

Could you post pictures of your new, current setup?
I am really interested in your solution.

Bottle looks perfect to stab you in the throat if you crash…

OP wanted the Fuelselage to hold water and the BTA to hold nutrition.

I sure can post some pictures but it will be Friday at the earliest as my bike is being shipped to the east cast to ride while i am on vacation

If you wanted to segregate the bottles but only have 1 straw you could do that with a nylon “T” or “Y” union and the valve i posted previously or use the “nylon pinch valve” like in the original photo…
http://www.amazon.com/STERILOX-TECHNOLOGIES-DIVISION-OF-PURICORE/dp/B009EC2CCY/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372205126&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=nylon+pinch+valve

The downsides to the pinch valve / “T” union version were it takes up lots of room, not clean, rather ugly and the tubing I used was too strong for the pinch valves to work reliably. All solvable with enough time and design iterations but i like my current setup as I’m using a liquid / solid nutrition setup which meets my needs.

As for “stabbing me in the throat”, I’m not worried about riding with my chin resting on the BTA anytime soon.

Sorry for asking again:

I would really appreciate to see some pictures of your BTA - Fuelselage connection!

Thank you very much,

This is about my 5th revision of my system. www.flickr.com/photos/98813281@N05/

Functionally its very sound and serves it purpose well.

**My goals - **
Integrate with the Shiv hydration system to provide additional capacity for unsupported and nonstop long distance rides in exceptionally hot conditions.
Provide quick / on the fly refill capacity
Management of fluid temperature
Single drinking tube
Aero as possible
Flexible capacity options (current max ~ 115ounces)

What i did
Speedfill attachment
32ounce bottle
Water exit port on the rear bottom of bottle
Camelbac on/off valve
Neoprene wine bottle cooler to insulate BTA (water was getting very warm)
Hose insulation
Camelbac fluid management meter (trying to increase my hydration
Ospry bite valve with integrated magnet
Rare earth magnet taped to aerobar

Lessons learned
Partial or full freeze behind the seat insulated bottle / bottles (Will still be cold at 3hrs)
Initial fill BTA with ICE then add the coldest water you can to top it off (you will be pleasantly surprised on your 1st refill)
Works great with saltstick solution to minimize mess and cleaning BTA ( + I run best on solid nutrition)

Hi Danny,

Great work with the latest version, looks really nice for a high capacity fluid solution!

I’ve also tried to increase the amount of fluid I can carry (not on a Shiv though!) for unsupported rides, and noticed that you appear to have been able to connect the Speedfil A2 head unit to a Magnum 1 Litre bottle?

How did you do this? I also tried to do this but found out the Magnum 1 litre is not the ‘Specialized’ sized thread, but is larger, and can’t connect cleanly to the Speedfil A2?

Cheers.
