Anybody using rouvy on Apple TV?

Anybody using the public beta of rouvy on Apple TV? I’ve ridden a couple routes on it for like an hour each. The courses feel very “choppy”. I suspect it’s partially my trainer, Elite Direto, which is not the speediest at resistance changes. I think also since the courses I’ve done are real courses so they have lots of resistance changes that you would encounter in normal riding. But it makes it a bit of an interesting experience on my trainer. Wondering if others are having a similar experience.

I have used it once so far, my setup is a Tacx Neo 2. It feels like the resistance changes are very abrupt and not smooth, and once the grade goes above ~8% the resistance gets crazy hard, comparing to Zwift with the same trainer. I wasn’t sure if it was just the course I was riding (Kona), so I plan on trying some other routes.

Yeah. Abrupt might be a better term. I feel like the last course I rode a lot of quick ups and downs. I’m so used to Zwift or doing a trainerroad workout where things are smoother.

The resistance adjustment is not available on Apple TV. On iPad I can dial it down to about 75% and it’s pretty accurate to real life; otherwise, anything over 7% becomes unrideable, not just how abrupt but also how hard it becomes. The way I settled on 75% was by calibrating it with some of the commuting routes I know and have done thousands of times.

I feel like a lot of Rouvy routes have some pretty abrupt slope changes. I’m sure it’s comes down to how well the route was created, but it would be nice if their creation tool would do some smoothing. Quick slope changes from +8 to -3 are kind of shocking. I’d rather see some rounded hill tops.

I’d also like a way to adjust the downhill slope to be less than 100%. It just seems unproductive to do a ride with -8% grade for long periods of time. Maybe it’s my trainer (Staczero Halcyon) but basically spinning out on a trainer for long periods of time isn’t much fun. I would like it if you could set a max downhill slope to prevent spinning out. Maybe it’s there and I just haven’t looked into the settings enough.

One of the recent changes Rouvy made was what they are calling “AR 2.0”, in which they went back and re-mapped some of the AR routes to more closely follow the real elevations. With tenth of a degree slope precision, it does seem to make it a lot more abrupt, compared to Zwift, for example, which just rounds to the nearest degree. So, it doesn’t seem as smooth. I rode one of the Fred Whitton routes the other day (I ride using the Windows PC version) and it was kind of aggravating, to be honest. I don’t know how much of it is Rouvy, Windows/Apple TV, or the trainer. I have an aging Tacx Bushido, which isn’t all that great as far as responsiveness and smoothness, anyway.

I actually turned the realism down to 75% or so, which seemed to level things out a bit. I don’t know if that would give you the same desired effect on the Apple TV version, but it might be worth a try.

I’ll have to lower the realism a bit and see how that goes. I’m actually not riding much at this moment. Offseason strength training. But will be ramping up soon for some gravel events.

I quit zwift and I’m on Rouvy now. It’s 8 dollars a month compared with 15 for zwift and zwift is really crowded. Rouvy works really fine on my Apple TV but that could be coz of my 300mbps internet speed. Rouvy is not crowded and it’s almost very peaceful in a sense that no one is around.

How did u dial it down to 75% on iPad?

BTW on the topic of Rouvy, I have a 15% off code, figured I’d share it here.

I hope someone can get some use out of it.

I rode my first new AR course today and it actually seemed smoother than other rides, although I do tend to ride user created courses a lot. It still seems like they haven’t quite figured out how to do a smooth cresting of a hill.

The video is noticeably smoother with the new AR, although the very edges of the video are a bit wavy, and having other riders helps with the motivation more than I thought it would. The road grade signs are both nice and a bit annoying. It would be nice if there was a user setting for the change required to get a sign.

I wasn’t aware of this realism/reality level setting. I’ve noticed it but the name is not really self-explanatory. I put it somewhere in the graphics/visuals corner.

This gives me high hopes since, while I really enjoy Rouvy (in particular with all the new AR routes), riding anything above a grade of 8, 9 or 10% just sucks. I have a Neo 2 and it gets really mashy/ non realistic.

What does the reality level setting actually do? Reduce the grade? So a 10% grade becomes a 7.5% grade when this setting is set at 75%?

I am not sure exactly what the realty setting does, but I did a couple of rides last week, the first one I kept all of the settings as is, and even small hills felt like the Koppenberg or something, for the 2nd ride I switched to 50% and it felt more realistic.
Though I am not sure how this effects the flats and downhills, my overall power for the ride was on the low side, and I am wondering if that was part of the issue.

Koppenberg-syndrome, I’m just too aware of this too. I’ve always explained this by the weak breaks of the Neo, something they seem to have fixed in the latest model. Low speed + low cadence → mega suck.

Now I’m not entirely sure how Rouvy’s implementation plays into this. Did my first ride with reduced reality level. What a relief. Finally I can do far more routes which were off limit because of steep gradients. Those were simply no fun to ride before. Just wish this setting was more accessible, perhaps with short cut or so.
