I’m thinking about slapping one on to the back of my fixie - I’m sick of going through a tire a week.
You could always, you know, get brakes.
And give up my hipster persona?? NEVER!
I ride fixed all the time. I probably only lightly skid every few days or so even with no brakes. Plan your stops earlier.
At least get a front brake. I am no brake nazi, I feel totally comfortable without them, but in the end, it is safer to have that brake and use it. Think of how much money you can save on tires too. I usually use old race tires on my fixie. I slapped a pair of pro race 2s on once. I couldn’t believe that I must have gotten 2,000 more miles before my rear crapped out.
Rotate your wheel on occasion to stagger your wear spots. Just pop the chain off of the chain ring, and put it back on a tooth or two in a different place.

I have both brakes, but it’s more fun this way - I’d just rather something that lasts longer.
It’s harder to plan stops very early in downtown NYC. Whenever I ride down there, I get cut off like crazy. But it’s a great adrenaline booster.
I guess your intervals of sprinting to the next light faster then the cabbies is not working then. I prescribe more intervals and hill repeats on the brooklyn and verrazano bridges.
I’m about 15 miles away from the brooklyn bridge.
At this point in my training, 30 miles on a fixie is my entire workout!
Youll love this tire! Get it! I had one. I skid on em. Nothing bothers me.
I live in NYC too man I know how it feels.
We should ride, theres a velodrome at kissena.
I know this is kinda an old thread but I just ordered one tonight. I generally have used Gatorskins for a while now but they still burn through in about 2 months of daily riding, before that Soma’s (which I won’t buy anymore due to high price/cheap sidewalls) so I went on the hunt for a new wheel and saw some reviews on the thickslick and figured I would try it out. I’ll let you know if you’re still interested.
