Anybody use 5 hour energy during training/IM?

.

You know there is a 7 hour energy now right? Why not get 2 extra hours?

^lol^

…Only once. 5 hr energy works for some people. I am not one of them. I get extremely jittery and shaky for about 3min and then super crash. But I have a few friends that use it on their longer rides. I think it’s a placebo, but who knows, maybe it isn’t. It sure is easy enough to carry. I would try it yourself and see what happens…

I’ve used it on shorter distance stuff with no problems…maybe start there?

I do notice that I can’t take it after 6:00pm or I am wired all night…

I have used it before during a training run and ended up with some stomach aches. Not sure if it was the 5 hr energy or something else but I haven’t used it again since.

My IM time is longer than 5 hours.

I use it sometimes during work, but only if I’m near a clean bathroom.

Yes, i use it before some workouts and during sprints/oly races, for me there are no issues and it is just enough caffeine. I have a very sensitive digestive system/IBS and have no issues. What i like is that you get the caffeine of a red bull without any of the liquid filling you up. I would also use it in a half before the start.

I realize that the OP has deleted his post (?), but for posterity’s sake I’m mentioning that 5-hour energy is a waste of money. It’s caffeine with some vitamins.

Used it for IMC last year, one before bike and one before run. No problems at all. I used one last weekend before Rev3 Portland and then before the run, and no problems either. But I don’t have any problems stomaching them at all. That being said, on the run at IMC and both halfs I’ve done this year, COKE on the run, but the Red Bull at the turn was awful. I’ll do 5 hour again this year, bike and run, and coke the run thru. Looking at sub 10:15 for reference, was 11:08 last year.

I have used it in my last 3 Ironmans and it does work for me, I am huge with Vespa and the 5 Hour just keeps it rolling.

I’ve used it before hard workouts or if I didn’t get enough sleep. Nothing special, just a big jolt of caffeine. Works great to get me through the initial part where I’m usually dragging. It’s no different than any of the other “energy” shots out there, 200 mg or so of caffeine without all the liquid of coffee or Red Bull. There is an initial headrush; probably from that much caffeine instantly hitting, and heart rate goes up some, but it’s never affected my workout negatively. I’ve never tried it in the middle of say a long run, but I do use caffeinated gels.

Curious, I don’t see any text. Was it deleted by the powers that be? Perhaps Red Bull is a forum sponsor and they didn’t want any links to 5-hour energy…

(just joking, ST mods, except I’m also being serious… please don’t ban me)

I’m guessing you left it blank to let the subject title do the talking? As far as contributing constructively, I really like FRS.

Yep, left it blank and thanks for your response.

Sure thing. I like simple coffee the morning of a race for the caffeine as it’s: cheap, palatable, promotes pre-race ‘evacuation’ (#1 and #2), and doesn’t have the superfluous ingredients. Some studies suggest that caffeine may even dampen the perception of pain during endurance events.

I believe in the ‘Macca and Coke’ thread, someone posted a quote where he mentioned that taurine is, “good for the kidney.” No offense to the world champ, but that is idiotic. I hold 5-hour energy in a similar light in that it has unnecessary ingredients, and the very title of the product is a blatant lie. The best way to have energy for 5 hours is to get sufficient rest, eat healthy, and stay hydrated (but that’s another story…)

FRS is something that I’m curious to pursue as they have, or appear to have, more of a medical/scientific background. I haven’t investigated it yet but I’m going to. In checking their website just now, it appears that they have an enticing sample pack that they send out if you cover shipping (note: I don’t have any connection to FRS, just curious about their product). I’m a medical student so I know at least the basics of human physiology, so I’m quite skeptical of most products advertised to triathletes. My current opinion is that anyone taking an energy drink (eg. Red Bull) during a triathlon should switch to FRS or any other source of caffeine, really, but I need to audit FRS before I endorse it more fully.

I used it 3 times. Twice I noticed a marked difference in how I was feeling/energy level. The other time, I didn’t notice anything.

Old thread, I know, but just came across and totally agree that 5-hour energy, or other similar energy drinks full of caffeine and other crap, should be avoided during training and racing. However, I’ve been taking FRS for the past few months and have also raced with it and totally believe in it and love that it’s all natural. I’m able to train and race harder. Can’t explain the science, but I’m feeling the results.
