Family trip to Greenbrier resort in WV on the weekend. RCMioga and I will be bringing the bikes down with the hopes of getting in some big miles on the bike.
Anybody been down there for vacation or training? Any suggestions on riding down there, or in WV in general? Thanks!!
A friend of mine grew up in Lewisberg, which is about five miles from the Greenbrier. I haven’t been there in a while so things might have changed, but I remember a lot of the roads being really, really narrow. Like not much wider than one lane paved so if a car is heading toward you, both of you have to drive with one wheel on the soft shoulder so you don’t crash into each other. It would certainly be a great place to ride, with lots of hills and incredibly scenery, but also likely to be extremely dangerous. Also, if you have any allergies, they could really be set off by all of the farmland there.
I actually grew up in WV in the northern panhandle not too far from where you’re going. You’ll enjoy yourself. Greenbrier is a fantastic place to vacation. I’ve never biked in that area but I know it will be quite scenic. Try to take some time and get down to the New River Gorge bridge. Pretty cool to take a look at. There’s a ton to do over in the panhandle area with the caverns, nature areas, etc. It’s been years since I’ve been in that area but I imagine it hasn’t changed too much.
Been down there several times - mostly working (performing at corporate events at the Greenbrier). Beautiful area. Lewisburg, nearby, is very quaint - little shops. The mountains/hills are very interesting, and I think you can find some great roads if you ask the locals when you get there - make sure you ask for roads which you need.
Nice quiet area, but the area does fill up on weekends.
Do yourself a favor - call the conciege now to tell you about some roads for biking. Map them out ahead of time so you can see their layout, traffic patterns, etc.
