Any tips for training in a freaking cold garage?

I set up my trainer and suchlike out in the garage. It’s pretty cold out there. Would a heater and a fan make things more pleasant? Any suggestions on the type of heater, perhaps one of those ceramic deals? It’s cold, then I sweat, then I’m like a big clam. I don’t like being like a big clam.

My wife said my computrainer in the kitchen looked like “a middle school kid’s locker”. She was right I guess.

electric heater, then in the summer you can use it for heat acclimation (sp?)
.

I use a ceramic heater for doing work in the garage. The challenge is warming such a big area up (my heater is only 1500 watts, which is like a big hair dryer). I’d maybe try one of those sitting fairly close to the bike, pointed up at you so it’s actually warming you, not warming the room. I’ve been tempted to use the heater that mounts on a propane tank (lots of heat) but I’m concerned that it will use up all the oxygen in the garage.

As odd as it sounds, the fan may help, since you may be dressing for the cold then getting too warm.

Or you can just take over the basement like I did

I use my computrainer in the evening after the car has been used. As the engine cools off it heats the garage. Just a few degrees takes the edge off nicely.

i’ll try the heater, I can balance it on a stack of p235 75 R 16’s that I set the tele on. My little corner of hell.

If my garage was cold today I would have just opened the door because it was friggin 82 degrees today in Jacksonville, FL.

HTFU. Nothing like freezing your toes whilst wearing a sleeveless top. I’ve had sweat freeze on my stem riding in an unheated garage in the dead of winter. Start with a windbreaker and gloves, then shed the jacket as you get warm. Tights are optional, as are booties. Bring a towel for your stem/top tube/bars.

I just reminded my wife on who makes the mortgage payments. The garage remains a place for cars, as it should. Though I do have to lose another battle for that victory. I better hurry up and get my trainer workout done, before my wife puts Mama Mia in the DVD player!

You cant ride it for a hour in the house then put it away and the bike back in the garage? Is there not more than one room in the house where you can ride? How bout the basement if you have one?Tell wife it is better in the kitchen then in the bedroom. I think this is one of them battles where you have to stand your ground. It is unhealthy and can effect your ehole season. My buddies used to have a body shop we used a propane heater in the shop when we were 17-18 yo. it worked great. I guess that would work well for you if you if you do not want to man up, but buy a co detector and plug that in while you are working out. Just in case.

Long Sleeve T-shirt to start. Remove when warmed up. Use to wipe bike down when done.
Made it through winter in NY last year. Will do the same this year.

There isn’t wind, it aint that cold.

Nope, no HTFU for me, thank you very much. Got up early and marched out to that garage and dismantled hell and moved it to my little corner of heck down in the basement. Now I have Mister Panel box and Fred the Furnace to keep me company and listen to my stories about getting dropped from the break. Plus it’s downright hot.

My old garage was unheat and detached from my house. So, here in WI that meant cold.

I had two 200 watt flood lights in the ceiling fixtures for warming things up / melting snow off Ms. Gestapo’s van, etc. I would turn them on when I let the dogs out. 15 minutes later the temp was tolerable for a long sleeved t-shirt. Then, after about a half hour, I would go to a regular t-shirt. It was alway fun to watch my computer’s temp reading go up as the heat from my workout warmed the garage.

I will say that sometimes it was so cold that the sweat puddle under my rollers would freeze. But, that was rare.

Oh, don’t touch metal surfaces with sweaty hands. It can get a little sticky.

I thought I was the only one who had a “Momma Mia” crazed wife - maybe that cold garage is starting to sound a little better!

Surprised noone suggested hot tea or other beverage in the water bottles, I find this can make the first 10-20 minutes go better til you warm up. 50/50 boiling & room temp water makes for a very warm but gulpable mix for me.

i live in chicago and train in the garage during the winter. i put up some insulation and framed out the garage. this helped most. i also use one of those plug in style radiator heaters, put it on a timer and set it to start warming up the garage about an hour before the workout begins. by the time i start, the garage is warm enough. i usually shut off the heater after the warm up. this heater does not emit any fumes.

How cold is cold?

too darn cold for me. Damp, cold, clammy and crummy, so I moved inside. I’ve never heard someone say “my spring was terrible, I ddn’t train out in the cold soggy garage enough, that’s my problem” so screw that, I’m back inside.

why dont you just bike in your house?

Is that vcr beta and it looks like you got the 8 mm screws mixed up with the 10mm nuts in that one tray. Nice neat wiring on the eletric panel though.

No, it’s DVD all the way. Foyles War in fact.

Note the city water coming through the wall on the left, after 20 years of crap well water that’s a godsend.

Freaking hot down there with the furnace and water heater, feast or famine.
