Looking to purchase a good wetsuit online but sizing is always difficult to get right. The TYR Hurricane Cat5 looks impressive.
I’m 5’11" and 155 which can fall into the S/M category. I wanted to see if anyone owned this wetsuit and can describe their dimensions and experiences.
Don’t own it so I can’t help with the sizing but I can tell you that the 3 people I know who bought one have since moved on after getting fed up with it.
Please do give us a shot. I’m confident you’ll be pleased with the shoulder flexibility of our suits. I should note that our Maverick Elite suit is no slouch and is incredibly flexible up top as well. If you don’t like the suit, you can always return it within 30 days for a full refund, and we pay shipping both ways.
If we can help answer any questions, please don’t hesitate to email support@rokasports.com or call (877) 985-ROKA.
I bought a CAT3 last year. Male 5’9" ~150-155lbs. Based on the TYR size chart, I ordered size S and S/M. Tried S…couldn’t even get up past my calf. S/M I got onto my legs but couldn’t get my arms in as hard as I tried. Returned both and tried a M, which ending up fitting perfectly, although the forearms are still quite tight and take some finesse to get on. Maybe the CAT5 is a bit more flexible…but I think the size chart is still probably ridiculous.
A few complaints include the extremely poor construction of the catch panels and general fragility of the suit (I can only imagine how fragile the CAT5 would be). However, this suit is flexible, very buoyant and super-FAST for me relative to any of my past wetsuits. As a result, I would prob buy this wetsuit again in an instant if I had the choice again. If it was better constructed and more durable, it would be totally amazing. The only other wetsuit that I’d like to try is the HUUB 3:5 version.
I just bought the sleeveless cat 5 in small. I’m 5’6" and 150, right in the middle of the small size chart. I found it incredibly constrictive around the chest. In fact, I had breathing issues the first time I wore it.
i’m 5’9" and 140. the S/M is a perfect race fit for me, tight but not uncomfortable.
the TYR suits feel great in the water, but I’d second the fragile comment, especially the CAT5. yes, you have to be careful with all high-end wetsuits. i am. and i’ve ripped the crap out of two cat5 suits. for that reason, i cant recommend them.
i just received a roka maverick elite, size small. first open water swim will be later today.
Try a Cat 3. Size ML. We’re the same build and the suit is great. Less expensive than the Cat 5. Fast and light. Yes the fit is tight on the land but once in the water it is warm, flexible, and fast. I do not feel bogged down in the suit during a 1500M or even a 3.8K swim like I did in my earlier wet suits. Doug
I’m 5’11 and weigh between 142 to 147 with pretty broad shoulders and a bit longer torso. Last year I was in a S/M and felt cramped. I got a M this year and it fits perfect.
5’ 7", 145, exactly in the middle of the small on the size chart. This suit is so tight and hard to get in to that it is crazy. If I were 20-30 pounds lighter it might fit. Of course it is so tight and hard to get on that it has about a dozen little tears. None of my other wetsuits (I own three now) have any tears so it is specific to this wetsuit, not my carelessness. Once it is on, it is fast and feels OK in the water but I am afraid to wear it in a race because it would be so difficult to get off. I was looking for a really tight wetsuit but this is ridiculous.
I would not recommend this wetsuit to anyone based on my experience.
I love the Special Ops goggles but have had two pair fall apart at the bridge… by contrast I have some of their Nest Pros that have lasted going on two years.
I have some of their Luggage, and the seams started falling apart after two trips. Thankfully I got them cheap.
The Convoy Transition bag so far has held up nicely.
The Hurricane Cat 5? It will pick up nicks easily, but this can be taken care of with MacNetts Rubber seal fairly easily. After a year or so, I see a lot of breakdown on the seams, i.e. the tears are not nicks from fingernails, but the seams degrading/separating. It is a fast suit, in some ways one of the best fitting suits I have worn, but I would not pay retail for one, and would expect it to have a life expectancy of 2 years - 3 years tops. The number of seams I have been touching up now on my second year is sort of sad
I have the Hurricane Cat 5 in M/L and I am 5’9" and 155 and it fits well (I can zip it without help). I also have the Sleeveless in M/L and that suit is the winner for me. Great fit and obviously less restriction in the shoulders.
I’m 5’8" and weigh 153. I have a Medium CAT5. Its a bit tight in the shoulders, but I only notice that at the beginning of the year when I haven’t worn a wetsuit for 8 months. For a reference, I wear a size 40 suit jacket.
Overall great wetsuit.
i have used a Cat3 for a year and a half, and am very happy with it. previously used an Ironman-brand and an Orca Predator. the Cat3 is faster than either. i am 5’8" and 142 lbs and have a S/M. Its tight (i tried a Small and it was impossible) but fits well once it is on properly. Needs to be pulled up into the crotch and up on the chest more than my other two suits. As long as I remember to wear thin cotton gloves when putting the suit on, then i don’t nick it. When I forget the gloves, then I sometimes cause a small nick.
