Any Orca Apex II Reviews

Has anyone tried this wetsuit yet? Thoughts?

I’m curious about the difference between that and the 3.8 they are selling. I think it’s just marketing. There are perciously few places you can go and test different wetsuits.

I am sorting between my options in wetsuits and these two are in the mix, so I have the same questions actually.

FYI

I had a chance to test drive the 3.8. It was “super fast” with very little shoulder restriction. The cost and the fact that it ripped my neck apart made it a no-go for me.

Explain the neck ripping thing…

I thought the new design of the 3.8 and the Apex II was supposed to eliminate that.

After a 30 minute open water swim I had a nice sore around a portion of my neck from all the breathing and sighting. I did test it in rough water so the sighting and breathing was a little more aggressive than it would be in clam water. I assume with some body glide or other remedy I may have been able to elimate the friction. My IM Stealth (3-4 years old) does not bother my neck at all. If it bothers my neck out of the box I will not consider purchasing it.

When you say it was super fast, what do you mean? Did it keep you high in the water? How did the “vents” work?

I had a choice between apex 2 and 3.8. The 3.8 has airlyte in the lower legs, whereas the apex doesn’t. The Apex 2 allows you to get more out of your kick as it doesn’t float your legs as much. I was going to get the apex 2, but unfortunately the sizes they had didn’t fit me quite right, whereas the 3.8 did.

So if you’re a strong swimmer and want to get more out of your kick…apex 2 might be better for you.

Neal,

My primary focus is IM use where I do not kick much, so I was looking for something that would float the legs. For the most part it gave me perfect position on top of the water. Currently I exit the water in the top 1% of my age-group and I assume with the 3.8 on I would pick up another 30-45 seconds at the IM distance over my IM stealth.

The 3.8 may work great for others, just wasn’t my cup of tea because of the neck issues and cost. I would recommend test driving it before purchasing it given its cost.
