Any NYC area people have a Merlin stolen?

Seems like an awfully good deal…

So…who wants to deal with the incarcerated ex-boyfriend?

Funny, I’ve been playing along with a guy who was apparently selling a BRAND NEW Felt F15 for a mere $400! My first thought was, Ok, did anyone in Memphis have a Felt stolen. So I inquire as to the exact location of the bike–wouldn’t you guess, ROMANIA! No problem, I play along, guess how he wants payment–Western Union. But wait, as if $400 wasn’t good enough, I ask if he can take $350. No problem he says.

Gosh am I being scammed?

Wonder how long I can drag this out…

That’s great stuff. Tell him you have a friend in romania who will give him a check for $450 for his trouble if he’ll ship the bike first!

I don’t know what kind of scam this guy is trying to pull. I shot off a one liner saying I’d take it. Got a response a few minutes later saying it’d been sold 1/2 hour earlier. I figured if it was indeed stolen I could buy it and try to track down the original owner (who I’m sure would cough up the 250 for the returned bike). Or I could get contact info to report to the police. Someone told me the pics in the craigslist ad were the same ones from an ebay auction selling the bike for almost 3000.

Gee - the post that this link goes to has been deleted -

interesting that it has reflectors on the wheels and no pedals - who would ride a Merlin and leave the reflectors on? Perhaps stolen from a shop?

who would ride a Merlin and leave the reflectors on?

Certainly not cool people like you and me, but maybe some clod who thinks they add a margin of safety?

In which case they’d best read Forester or Schubert, before they rely too heavily on them and get smooshed.

If you saw most of my bikes you’d retract your accusation of me being ‘cool’ as my rides are anything but. Though, it’s true that not many of them have wheel reflectors. 3M tape on the rims is better. I did leave the reflectors on the Stingray reissue for completeness. And all that aside, the observation pertains to a stereotypical Merlin owner (racer or at least wants to be, and most likely quite concerned about the dreaded rotating weight), not retrogrouches like you and me. If you can show me one with reflectors on it that actually gets ridden, I’ll recant.
