I take 20mg of Simvastatin. It’s been almost a year since I began my fitness program, (after 25 years of inactivity) and although I have made some progress, it’s been a slow slog. I do understand that everything gets slower after age 50, but my concern is that perhaps the statin use is a drag on my progress.
As a PhD myself, I’ve observed many shoddy medical studies with heroic conclusions drawn from extremely tiny samples sizes. And I’ve also watched many long standing medical findings reversed as newer research throws out the old. That’s not to say the above articles are wrong, but a little caution is in order especially when they are used in a manner which breaks a cardinal rule in statistics, to wit, don’t extrapolate beyond the bounds of your data. The first article does not define a “well-nourished” adult and it’s doubtful that a majority of the “general population” eats a well-rounded diet that a nutritionist would recommend. Further, since when is a long course triathlete, putting in 2 to 3 times the daily recommended exercise, representative of the general population?
Many athletes continue to reject the advice of these sorts of articles because they inherently understand that they are subjecting themselves to stresses and nutrient depletion in a manner completely different than a “normal” person – whatever that is.
As to CoQ10, do I think it will help someone get fit? No. But it might help reduce the stress on your heart in an activity that seems to make people prone to A-Fib. Maybe you can produce a study that deals specifically with that supplement and specifically with endurance athletes…then you might have some evidence that is relevant to the OP’s question.
Finally, I think that prior to publication of any peer-reviewed article, health and medical journals should require an upfront acknowledgement of all funding sources that underwrote the research. That in itself might be telling.
more worse about the statins, they tax the liver, and also eat muscle away… so basically you are taking something that is killing you. how about instead of a pill that makes you think you still can eat like crap, fix your diet first? i have a feeling you still have processed food in your diet… (and need to fix other life style factors such as sleep and stress).
