Any 2020-2022 Toyota Highlander Owners Here?

I’ve begun the car shopping dance and was curious if there are any current 2020 to 2022 Toyota Highlander owners here that could share their experiences with said years.

I am interested in the xse line as it looks the best. I also want to avoid the four-cylinder with the turbo versus a 6 cylinder which is in the 2020 to 2022 models.

Do you love it? Do you hate it? Have you had issues? Would you buy it again?
Or were you looking at getting one and decided to get something different?

I have a 2020. XLE. We leased for 3 years because my wife had been in Siennas for 20 years as the kids were raised.

She like it but it was “too big”. At the end of the lease I ditched my company car and bought out the Highlander for me. Put her in a 2024 Rav 4

As you can see not our first Toyota. Not my first highlander. I think it’s the best sized Toyota SUV and I’ve had them all

I bought it out with 48k miles. At 59xxx it needed a new transmission. Which was the first time I’ve had that problem in a Toyota. Fortunately it was about 300 miles below 60k warranty. Dealership took good care of me and I’m driving now

I’d recommend.

I have the 2017 HiHy XLE with a V6. It’s been a really good car. It’s been very reliable.

I was in the market for a three row suv last year. Test drove a lot of them and settled on the Pilot. I really really really didnt like the Highlanders steering. It felt too “fly by wire” to me. The Pilots steering is lighter than my 2014 cx-5, but way more engaging than the Highlander. But that was really the only knock i had on it besides Honda has more branded accessories that i liked vs aftermarket for the Highlander.

I have two dogs, so the cargo divider, floor mat, and cargo wall protection for Honda checked a ton of boxes for me.

I noticed that interesting steering issue with the Highlander. A combination of small wheel and very little road feel turned me off.

I ended up getting an F150, but at the time it was a choice between that and a Highlander. In a nutshell, I was looking at midsized pickups and they effectively had less cargo space than a highlander, so I was either going to go full sized, or stick with a mid sized SUV.

Our other car is a Rav4 Prime, which is our 3rd Rav4 since 2008 (the Mrs. had one for 12 years. This is her 2nd. I had one for 5 before trading in for the pickup).

I would do the same if I was in that place and ended up with going bigger. The additional room in Highlander to Rav4 is a plus. The next move up to 4runner or Sequia is not substantial enough (enclosed space) to be worth the gas mileage and boat driving. I would go to a pickup for space above Highlander as well

Just test drove a 2022 XSE Highlander and like it. I’m currently in a 2007 Highlander gen 1 with 267k. I like my car a lot, but my mileage is high with work needed on it and my wife has a 2017 Rav4 with 126k. I’m partially looking to get a newer car because I don’t want to have 2 car payments at the same time in the future. I figured my wife can go to 200 and hopefully longer before she needs a new car.

In my research I’ve basically found the xse is going for 35k-39k for a used vehicle ( don’t want a turbo powered 4 cylinder) with a loan that is about 550-650 depending on what we put down. That sucks. My wife and I make pretty good $ and I’m shocked how high rates are right now. Our credit is over 800.

Oddly, I thought about just getting a Corolla hybrid, but a new ones is 30k by the time you add tax, tags, fees. I’d rather have the Highlander used for 7-8k more!

My wife and I are pretty responsible with putting $in 403b each and she has a Roth and we also have a 529 for 1 kid and then we have two other savings accounts. We are also paying $225 extra into our mortgage payment.

I’m just struggling to process how used cars are so high. I want a newer car for the warranty ( I just don’t trust anything anymore), but didn’t think I’d ever consider putting out 40k for a used car. Well, actually we aren’t going to. Payment is stupid. Hopefully they’ll reach back out to us, but don’t expect them to since most “clean” cars not in accidents are 37k or so.

4runner’s are really expensive for what you get out of them, unless you need them for actual off roading or towing. Otherwise, they’re just expensive highlanders.
