Answer these Questions and become a Memphis Police Sergeant!

Looks like the Memphis PD’s dumbed down the sergeant’s exam to ridiculously easy levels. From the practice questions below, it looks like anybody who watches CSI, Cops or just about any cops or lawyers show has what it takes to make it down in TN. What’s up with that?

“Our standards are the highest. Our officers are the finest.” That’s the motto of the Memphis Police Academy.

This is one of the questions pulled from practice materials used in the sergeant’s promotional process:

A search warrant is a document that gives permission to conduct a search:
A) With consent
B) Without consent
C) Of an arrested individual
D) Of an abandoned vehicle

Memphis Police Officers who did not want to be interviewed publicly say the promotional process has become a joke; the test is embarrassingly easy.

Memphis Police Association president J.D. Sewell says that was intentional. “That is a goal, to make it simple enough and fair enough for everybody that hopefully there’s no grounds to challenge it in court,” says Sewell.

The promotional process in the Memphis Police Department is notorious for landing the City of Memphis in court. In 2005 when the MPD was promoting to the rank of major, the city used content exam scores to rank candidates. But city officials thought not enough African American candidates scored high enough to be promoted. This caused a group of officers to sue.

It also caused the city to re-think the way it promotes officers.

Sewell says the city must use an exam, which has typically been the cause of discrimination lawsuits, "I propose that it be easy and they go by seniority because then there’s no discrimination.”

Some questions resemble elementary grammar:

Citizens should always lock ________ vehicles and secure valuables in the trunk.

C) Their
D) They

Even some pertaining to police work seemed over simplified.
A search warrant must be issued by:

You wouldn’t believe how many people would get that one wrong.

What happens when a police report is riddled with grammar and spelling errors? Does the defense attorney get people to wonder what else they got wrong?

They should add “What is the meaning of the word ‘is’.”

Sounds like a perfect fit for the little hamlet of Wellford, back in my dear ol’ home state of South Carolina.

Why are you acting surprised?

When my coffee-cup hero speaks of ‘saving or creating’ 1.5 milion new jobs, he does not differentiate between the public sector and the private sector. Did you not notice this?

No jobs are being created in the private sector…this is where all the jobs are being lost.

Jobs in the public sector are plentiful and as you have presented, requirements are being dumbed down so that any street urchin is qualified for the Memphis PD

Pop Quiz for of you liberals missing the Economics 101 Chromosone, please tell the audience who is feeding this^^^^^^ machine…?

Don’t they have spell check yet in Memphis

Excellent, Sgt. Josh. Next up, the lieutenants test.

That is great news! There test wasn’t two hard : )

I am actually considering being a PO (not in Memphis) and hope the exam is this easy- would really cut down on studying!

Great idea. Since everyone passes, they will have to base promotions on something subjective which also could never be challenged in court. !!!

***I am shocked that they would have to dumb down the test. All of the smartest, talented and most capable kids I knew growing up all aspired to be cops. ***

True dat. That’s where all the good bribes and corruption can be found. Why work slave hours on Wall Street or in some shlub desk job when you can carry a gun and shake people down for whatever you need? Ain’t you never watched “Training Day?”

Hey now- I graduated Magna Cum Laude and looking into becoming a police officer…
I was recently promoted, do a good job and in theory run the department in several years.
I just get bored at a desk, my dad was a cop and law enforcement interests me.
