Another fun WW project or lighten up my Tri bike!

Hi People,

First, thanks to all that have been contributing and making suggestion on my other thread regarding a pseudo WW road bike build (Jamis Xenith SL). Just to clarify why suddendly these projects ( hey I should know with years in ST that aero trumps weight and that I should loose the weight before the bike right…). I might be moving for an extended period of time to a place pretty different to where I live and train currently, going from pancake flat to hilly with lots of steep climbs so I want to make it as easier as possible without spending insane amounts of money. Here are my thoughts and where i need help:

  1. I am going to stick with 53/39 in the front but change the back to 12-27 probably. I used 12-25 in SF and it was ok but not optimal

  2. This are the places where I could shed some weight from the bike since I dont want to change aerobars: saddle (currently Selle Italia C2= heavy), stem, crankset/crankarms (currently ultegra=heavy), brake calipers (currently ultegra=heavy), pedals (dont really know if worth changing since I want to stick with look keo, currently have the classic model)

  3. As per wheels my training wheels are Ritchey DS PRO which are really heavy but I might keep them since they are “training” wheels, certainly looking for some deep carbon clinchers that are light (currently Spinergy Stealth SS 45mm deep at around 1740g)

  4. I would rather not change the drivetrain since I have full ultegra and it works fine but probably changing something like the crankarms to something really light will help. I might be able to fish for inexpensive Dura Ace FD and RD but not sure if the weight savings is worth it…

  5. Skewers???

As always open to suggestions and ideas I might be overlooking

Peace

Heavy as a reference to Ultegra is a relative term - compared with DA - it is heavIER - compared with some other grouppos out there - it is just fine
Posibly a better single investment would be to change to a compact front end - as it seems that the goal in losing the weight on the bike is to enhance your climbing ability

you could easily drop thousands and shed less than a pound total weight on the ride - just to climb easier.

if I were you - a compact crank to address gearing would achieve the same result

Hey,

Thanks. I was comparing ultegra with Dura Ace correct and my road bike build which is a mix of Sram Red and other lighter stuff, for instance KCNC brakes that I might also use on the tri bike if i like them.

I thought about the compact (I have never had a compact bike) but also a lot of the triathlons in the area dont have tons of climbing or as much as longer training rides I might do, plus I am going to be racing in other cities where the racing still pretty flat, therefore I wasnt sure if changing to a compact will be the best option “overall” but is something to consider.

Peace

I just put some M2 Racer skewers on my TT bike.

Herbert

where can i get my hands on a pair of those?

Love those skewers - been using them for 2 years, but my front is a little worn. Where did you find since they have been out of business for while now (M2 racer that is)?

Rod

Just found this.
