Another "Bandit" thread...maybe more RD's need to step up

After reading the other thread…and the fact that it does not seem people do not think that it is wrong. After having an entire team bandit Rockman 08 with new players.

**ANY person found to be on the course unregistered at Rockman 08 events will be charged, and arrested for tresspassing as well as theft of services. All participants should be paid entrants to the event. There is NO justification for anyone to bandit any event. NAS has taken a very strict stance on this issue, as will I. For anyone who thinks that this is not a giant liability issue…please, go get a law degree - then comment. **

.

If I were closer, I would clearly would do your race since you care about following rules.

Dave

Ok, what procedures will you have in place to deal with this GIANT issue?

It’s pretty easy to prevent all but the most determined bandits.
.

There is this guy Blake that is running around Clermont saying he is gonna race Rockman without paying. Watch out for him Chipper.

My bad! You are talking about people racing with someone else’s registrations.

Got it. So since it was a marathon it was ok.

It is a giant issue for liability. ID’s needed to enter and get a chip for one. It was shocking to me that last year a team entered and had only one person of the team entered at the event. Rockman does not sell out like other events so I doubt that we will have issues with the individual event. But, being as we figure that a number will identify a person - there is a liability there if the number identifies someone other than who is entered.

I think that if I were banditing your race, there would be very little chance I would bother to read all your rules & regulations beforehand.

OK, there’s a ZERO percent chance.

btw, how big of a problem is banditing in triathlon? I would not have guessed that it would be much of an issue.

And by the way again, last year you offered a free race entry to anyone who would drink some vodka during the race (result of some pansies whining about some dude who got handed vodka during a race and then he punched the volunteer). I announced in that thread that I was your man for that. Then I never heard from you. I was sad.

And VOILA!!!

Here she is

The Vodka challange stands…as part of the run course is out of the state park and its regulations. You want to come and play, hell I am game as long as you are paid to play.

In addition, the “vodka challange” was more of a joke after an aid station at another race had vodka in cups for folks who did not know that it was there…thus my humor and my challange…

**ANY person found to be on the course unregistered at Rockman 08 events will be charged, and arrested for tresspassing as well as theft of services. **
how do you enforce this?..do you have a municipal ordinace or local law passed that actually says that people will be arrested?..like a person who is using the same road, for what ever reason, like a home owner walking their dog or driving to their house, or even a person spectating will have the police come and stop them?

oh dear a giant liability for someone entering who is not registered. But NOT a giant liability for encouraging people to drink vodka during the race ??

.

I know I am already in for the 1000/1000 challenge, but if I get in on the vodka challenge, will you pay for my plane ticket???

BTW, I am dead serious…

Pretty easy. Last year people who were not registered took items from aid stations…theft. Tresspassing if a person has anything in transition…and if I find out after the fact as I did last year…we will still pursue charges.

This is an issue that people need to be aware of. Banditing a race is theft plain and simple. Dont think that you are too smart for that and a dog walker is anything more than a dog walker.

I don’t have a law degree, but it seems pretty common sense that a guy walking his dog isn’t a bandit; however a guy swimming, biking, and running on the same course as well as making use of transition areas and aid stations is.

Be there, done that. I was RD of the 2002 National LCC and we caught a guy in the weeds off to the left of the swim course trying to enter the water without body marking, chip and all that. Local cops told him he could not enter the race or the water after consulting me.
Bandit ran into the water anyway with a big fat double middle finger waving in the wind! Really, dumb ass forgot the swim exit/bike in was just down the beach. We radioed ahead and the idiot was arrested entering T1 after becoming very loud, foul mouthed and resisting logic. Her could not continue because he was not registered. He was hand-cuffed, put in the squad car and lost his USAT L-card for a year.

not being a smartass here - but how you gonna do that ??

“arrest and charge” ?? that is a function of law enforcement. you really think rockford IL law enforcement is going to arrest somebody, and the DA is going to charge somebody - for pretending they are somebody else in a triathlon ??

that’s sad but also a funny mental image…I can’t stop cracking up.

I wasn’t aware of a lot of the insurance issues. That is one of the downsides of our legal system (and yes, I do think there are a lot of upsides.)
